Inactive Wireless connection option gone, can copy and cut, but paste is greyed out

Not sure what happened last Tuesday, but at first, the laptop couldn't find the "system" file and would not start up even under safe mode. I used the XP DVD and was able to bring up the system and login, but...

Symantec won't run, I can cut or copy but not paste to anything, including WD passports; "paste" is greyed out.

I can only plug in internet access - the wireless option doesnt come up any more.

The system restore is not on and has an error message when I've tried to turn it on; probably because of the issues I'm having now?

I was able to run the hijacthis application. BUT I can't attach it since the paperclip icon isn't working above the message box. Luckily, I could copy and CTRL+ V below

(DID I run this correct??)

I'd appreciate any ideas!

Thanks!!

Pam

Good morning,

I booted up the laptop via an external DVD drive; this is a netbook (sorry about that) that has XP & SP3 on it.

When the contents of the DVD came up, I selected the "install xp" option and then "r" to repair. When the netbook rebooted after installation, I disconnected the DVD drive.

I'm now trying to install the "optional Windows components" (except for the fax) from the DVD.

Then, I selected the "additional tasks" option and copied what I'm hoping to be all of my files and applications to a WD external HD. It brought up a wizard and created an IMG on the external HD.

Then, I selected "set up home or office network" option and it installed network and LOL ..... restarted the system and the "start" button disappeared!!

Down a dark hole!

Ha - found it! Had to do "properties" for the bottom taskbar and change it to show the "quick start." Still working on it! Lol...
