Rumor mill: Amazon MGM Studios is moving forward with a television adaptation of the long-running Wolfenstein video game series, Variety has learned. The project, which unites creative forces behind recent video game-to-TV successes (including the team behind Amazon's acclaimed Fallout series) is being developed under considerable secrecy, with even basic plot details still under wraps.

The series is based on the iconic games known for their alternate history narratives set in the aftermath of World War II. Central to the franchise is the battle against a technologically advanced Nazi regime, with most entries following the exploits of American soldier William "B.J." Blazkowicz.

Over the decades, Wolfenstein has been recognized not only for its storytelling – blending science fiction and the occult – but also for pioneering the first-person shooter genre and influencing the evolution of video game storytelling.

Patrick Somerville, whose previous credits include Station Eleven and Maniac, is attached as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner. He brings to the adaptation a reputation for combining imaginative fiction with character-driven drama.

The production team includes Kilter Films, the company behind Amazon's successful Fallout series, with Jonathan Nolan, Lisa Joy, and Athena Wickham serving as executive producers. They are joined by James Altman of Keyframe Films and Jerk Gustafsson of MachineGames, the current developer of the Wolfenstein franchise.

Although the series' official description remains terse... "The story of killing Nazis is evergreen," the involvement of MachineGames and Kilter Films suggests an approach rooted in the timeline established by the recent rebooted games.

These titles thrust Blazkowicz into a nightmarish version of history, where the Axis powers have won World War II through the use of advanced technology. The storylines blend high-octane action with dark satire, often exploring the consequences of unchecked authoritarian power, a thematic thread likely to carry over into the television adaptation.

No release date or casting announcements have been made, and Amazon MGM Studios declined to comment further on the production's status or schedule.

The adaptation comes amid Amazon's increased investment in video game properties for television. In addition to the hit Fallout series, the company is developing adaptations of titles such as Mass Effect and God of War, reflecting the growing appetite for long-form video game storytelling in the streaming space.

The Wolfenstein franchise spans over four decades, most notably marked by the 1992 hit Wolfenstein 3D, which helped popularize the now-standard first-person perspective in action games. More recent titles, including The New Order and Youngblood, have expanded the alternate history premise.

I guess they're just doing it for name recognition (Wolfenstein), but I don't know why studios don't just come up with their own IPs. There is plenty room to write a story of fighting Nazis without infringing on the Wolfenstein IP, and have total creative freedom to boot.

Another epic girlboss Guyladriel, who killed a troll in under 10 seconds, leaving her comrades behind and causing evil to relapse for the lulz incoming.

Anyone expecting anything decent is deluded and has no idea how woke and insane Amazon are. They will happily throw a billion at a series that earns Youtubers more money than the studio.

No more stories about Nazis ever again please. We have a ton of them, just stop. Make up a bad guy if you need to just no more Nazis in movies or any where else. The very word is done and cooked.

Let's hope they keep the woke out of it.

Seriously though, I don't think the MAGAs have too much to worry about.
I mean, it is Wolfenstein, so there will be some degree of love for Hitler.
Plus, seeing as it is Nazi Germany, there will be an extreme level of ignoring people of other races and religions. Not to mention wishing nothing but hardship and harm on them.
So it only follows nobody else will be held up to an equal level as the Nazis, unless they have the cash or are traitors to their own.
That already is 4 plusses for MAGAs.

Now, we know eventually the Nazis lose, sorry, but at least MAGA can take comfort in the fact that many innocent people will be hurt, ruined, or killed along the way.
Just seems to me like a far right CONServatives utopia.

Yes the social darwamists aka national socialists, lost.

Yes the social darwamists aka national socialists, lost.
MAGAs never understand the ingrained BS party lines they quote. So, which socialists?
The communist or non-communist socialist nations?

Reality (sorry for using that term to all MAGAs) is quite different between the game, and Earth's actual history.
So, which ones specifically? There is a HUGE difference between the 2.

Here in the US, we are approaching 100 years of non-communist socialism, and yes Im
happy to explain that to you:

America is likely the only nation on Earth where Capitalism and Democratic Socialism co-exist.
And quite effectively.

That makes 0 sense. Nazis are based off of atheist darwinism; the apex contemporary of of communism.
Darwinism is science, and you don't have to be an atheist to understand it.
Lacking the ability to comprehend strong empirical evidence is of no concern to people that actually matter.
But please explain why I'm laughing this time.
Are you claiming a direct link between Darwinism and communism? Or are you claiming that the Nazi movement was a secondary byproduct of communism.
Or both? (Please let it be both!!)

So we are clear about Wolfenstein's plot of the games, there are two distinct arcs. The original two games focused on Blazkowicz fighting Nazis to escape the castle and disrupt their operations.

It was not until MachineGames took over did the Nazi's win the war theme come to play. Given, the article references MachineGames, it looks to be this will be the focus.

As @Homerlovesbeer mentions, this sounds a lot like Amazon's The Man in the High Castle kind of pitch, but hopefully this time with a little more action and supernatural.

Like most video game adaptions, it is hard to guess at this point if it will be any good. I have some faith in Amazon MGM Studios much more than if it was Netflix or Apple. Fallout was good and Amazon did manage to finish out The Expanse and The Boys is not terrible. Reacher was okay, at least the first two seasons. So there is hope.

I am note sure where all this aggressive anit-woke hate in this thread is coming from, but I do hope that they keep close to the true characters and story line. Fallout's "switch" to a female lead was not my favorite, but it did work out well in the end, especially with Cooper Howard (The Ghoul) playing a large part.

Let's just hope they go more the Reacher and The Boys route with this one.

To be honest, it's just a result of being told their opinions rather than learn, and form their own.
You could go through the TS posting history and get the same crap from a lot of the members.
But really the hate is just based on a complete misunderstanding of the word, combined with some pretty *****ic thoughts and behavior by people on the far left, in the name of being "woke".
Still, no excuse for not spotting the differences.
I mean, I am fully aware that a lot of people on the right know the 2020 election was not stolen, people did not eat dogs, and wind turbines are not killing us.
But let's face it, tRUMP knew EXACTLY who to target for his political career.

As for the story line, you're obviously right that there were some minor character shakeups in Fallout, but overall I think they did an excellent job of mixing the game's canon with some new story branches.
