Woman spends three nights in jail and faces six years in prison over Cash App account she never opened

A lot of the fault lies with the azzhat that thought it was a good idea to send $1000 to a stranger on FB. PATHETIC!

You got it. Seems like now it is normal to accuse someone and if the target have no money he can't fight for his rights. It's not anymore lawful country, people with power will always push those with worse standing. It is already done in business when big companies sends highly paid lawyers on smaller companies to get rid of the competition or start patent claim even if it's not remotely valid, but court is too expensive to actually take this fight. Money is a new law ...

Nothing new here, it's been going on for decades. Money doesn't buy happiness but it keeps you out of jail.

Or the insurer's money? (if the county or pd had insurance)
Smaller Municipalities: Often purchase commercial law enforcement liability insurance. When a lawsuit is settled, the insurance company covers the payout. However, severe or repeated misconduct causes insurance premiums to spike, which tax dollars must then cover.

Why would a scammer use their real name?
Smart enough to make the money harder to trace, yet dumb enough to use their own name and social security number... how dumb are the police...

I hope cash app and police involved will be arrested...

Well, let's see, I guess if it has to happen to me, I hope it's after I retire so I can afford to sit in jail and then sue the pants off those people. I need more money for retirement anyway.

The police will apologize with 1,000,000$ to 5,00,000$ dollars if she gets the right attorney... and I guarantee there are a ARMY of lawyers beating down her door right now telling her the same thing.

This settlement will bankrupt that police department as they deserve...

Wishful thinking...
Unfortunately, that's just not reality.

This should be straight forward for any detective that isn't sitting at a desk with his hand down his pants. Police subpoenas internet and cellphone data everyday if they pair that with the activity of the cash app they should be able to easily prove she couldn't be 2 places at once.

A basic investigation should have happened before she was arrested. Not investigating before putting the handcuffs on is just lazy.

It's not lazy. They don't care who did it. They don't care if you are innocent. All they want is a conviction.

Meanwhile, a non-violent offender has to pay $20k in bail to not sit in jail pending trial, which they are never getting back again.

When you post bail it is essentially collateral. Of you show up to court, the money is returned (win or lose).

If you use a bail bondsman they typically take a 10% fee for the loan.
