XP Freeze During Login / XP Antivirus / Redirecting

I got hit by malware initially. First I got the dreaded 'XP Antivirus' and also a particularly stubborn item that is redirecting all links provided by google in Firefox and IE.
I rebooted after an ad-aware scan, but it returned. So I looked up instructions, removed via malwarebytes and hijack this in safe mode.

Now my computer hangs during the 'loading your system settings' screen. I can boot fine in safe mode/with networking - although my google searches are still redirected.

malwarebytes is now giving an error when I attempt to run it in safe mode:

Im guessing there is an issue with loading the registry (hence the hang-point)

Hi Spectre,

I've just answered something like this in a similar post. You may want to read the following:

A lot of freezing and hanging problems like you describe are caused by errors in your registry.

Try downloading and running "Free Windows Registry Repair 1.5 "

Once your done compress your registry using "Free Registry Defrag/Compact (Freeware) - Version 2.35"

Sorry I can't post the link because I'm new to this forum. Just google the names and I'm sure you'll get them.

If anything it will do some good as not many people never truly look after their registry. Let me know how you go...

Thanks Buck,

Ive run both these programs. I also got a startup programs editor and turned off all startup program entries for the time being, in case a rogue program was causing the freeze.
I then tried booting my computer normally. The first time I managed to log on. Everything seemed normal until I clicked the start menu. I tried to right-click and delete two now redundant XP Antivirus entries (blank files now), whereapon the system froze, including the mouse.

Ive now managed to login again as per normal, and even run a second registry cleanup and boot some programs. Everything was fine until hitting 'documents' in my start menu prompted a freeze.

Also, I cannot access housecall.trendmicro.com, or any other antivirus website. I have checked my hosts file (system32/drivers/etc) and removed duplicate entries spybot had created - but there's nothing erroneous it seems.
My google searches are still being redirected to ad sites or random search engines...AAAH!

Hi Spectre,

If you can't get through to the Trendmicro website you can download the system cleaner from my website if you like. I updated it today with the latest definitions.

I'd suggest running it in safemode.

After successive attempts, I finally managed to get Antimalware to scan and remove the bulk of XP Antivirus, which seemed the main problem - this allowed me through to trend micro, which is currently running right now. Can't believe how vigilant XP Antivirus is/was - quite a battle so far...
