Forward-looking: Cloud-based gaming has often been controversial because of concerns regarding ownership. While Microsoft and Nvidia have found success by tying the technology to subscriptions and users' existing libraries, Twitch might have found another sensible use case, starting with Crimson Desert: streaming free playable demos.
Those interested in trying Crimson Desert, one of 2026's most ambitious and popular games, can now play it for free for 20 minutes. However, instead of installing the demo locally, players must stream the game over Twitch.
While 20 minutes might not be enough time to properly sample an open-world title as large as Crimson Desert, cloud streaming lets users try the game without a lengthy download. It also makes the demo available on any device with a web browser (which, ironically, excludes modern game consoles).

Using cloud streaming to try games before purchasing them circumvents one of the primary criticisms against the technology – that users cannot truly own games streamed over the internet. Google's ill-fated Stadia storefront famously failed to merge cloud gaming with a traditional storefront.
Since then, Microsoft and Nvidia have pursued cloud gaming as a supplement rather than a replacement for the traditional business model. While Microsoft's service ties a rotating list of titles to a subscription, Nvidia's GeForce Now allows subscribers to stream games they purchased from other storefronts. Allowing players to stream limited-time demos without subscriptions or purchases could become another workable model for cloud gaming. Whatever form it takes, Take-Two's CEO believes that cloud gaming might increase the game industry's addressable audience by a factor of 10 within three years.
Pearl Abyss likely released the demo to promote Crimson Desert Enhanced, a major free update that arrived last week. Since its initial mixed reception in March, the game has received numerous large updates that significantly altered its structure, including new difficulty settings, user interface changes, control customization, cross-save support, and new in-game content. The enhanced update bundles these changes with new scenes and voice lines for the main story and support for several additional languages.
Despite mixed reviews, Crimson Desert sold over 6 million copies in under three months, sparking discussions about its ambitious and surprisingly varied game mechanics. While Pearl Abyss has not yet unveiled the game's planned paid DLC, it is set to launch before the end of the year. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is also in development, and the company is exploring possibilities for multiplayer modes.
