Can anyone shed any light on the likely cause of this?

Comodo firewall is the problem. It's very new, when did you install it?

Probably caused by : cmdguard.sys ( cmdguard+e0c7 )
Image name: cmdguard.sys Timestamp: Thu Oct 23 05:33:24 2008 (48FF8E14)

Started to get BSODs with the error code 1000007e, parameter1 c0000005 since Nov. 3, 2008. After running windows debugging tool, I was able to analyze the minidumps and found out that the cmdguard.sys was causing the BSODs.

I also uninstalled Comodo Firewall, version 3.5.55810.432 and re-installed 3.0.25.378. No more BSODs sofar. Usually when I plugged in a USB after start-up of Windows, I got a BSOD right away. Tested this scenario this morning and didn't get a BSOD. Certainly a good sign. However, I will wait a few days to see whether I will get any BSODs again. Will report again early next week on any continued success.
By the way, this TechSpot community is fabulous. Really helped me getting to the bottom of my issue and probably saved me money by not having to take my computer into a shop. Thank you all for participating. Is really encouraging!

try this.

1. re boot the computer and keep hitting on the key "F8"
2. in the advance options menu select "safe mode with networking"
3.click on http://intelppm.notlong.com
4.install the fix
5.restart the computer

check if you are able to boot to the desktop
