No Internet Connection

Hi,

Having problems connecting to the internet through a router. It is not the connection as my friend can connect to the net in his room through the same router i was using until this loss of connection.

It was only the other day and I could not connect any more to the net through the wireless connection. I havent changed any settings.

I have ran virus checks on the comp and it doesnt show anything up. My wireless card can find the connection and others ok but it just wont connect to them. I had it briefly connected to the net the other night and as soon as I launched explorer I lost the connection. I attempted to use a cable to connect to the router but it wouldnt connect at all to the web and came up with no connection.

Has anyone got any ideas what the problem is or how to solve it? Software? Hardware? (was sure it wasnt a hardware if the wireless can find the connection I used previously?)

Also another problem I have is with my laptop. Just recently formatted the laptop and have problems connecting to the internet through a cable. It connects but when I launch Explorer it displays the error message "internet explorer unable to open the search page"

Thanks

Steven

Try going to a command prompt (Start - Run - CMD)
and flushing DNS
C:\>ipconfig /flushdns
Also do a release and renew of your IP

C:\>ipconfig /release
C:\>ipconfig /renew

Also download CCleaner to remove all the temporary Internet files (and all other temp stuff)

Try again after that

Hi,

I tried what you said above but I am still suffering problems!

I tried reinstalling my wireless card on my PC and carrried out the command prompts. On the PC i got the error message "No operation can be performed on Bluetooth network while its media is disconnected" and "No operation can be performed on Wireless network while its media is disconnected". It shows both wireless and LAN being disconnected.

I got the same message for the laptop "No operation can be performed on Bluetooth network while its media is disconnected" and "An error occured while renewing interface wireless network connection:unable to connect you to DHCP server. Request has timed out." Both wireless and LAN show that they are connected to the internet on the lapton but when I tried to go to a website via Internet Explorer it comes back with 'page cannot be displayed' or it wont connect to MSN even though both icons show it is connected to the web.

Many Thanks

Steven

Is wireless disabled ?
Is the firewall blocking all sites ? (have you tried with firewall off ?)
Have you reset the modem / router
Have you paid for your subscription to the Internet (may need to call your ISP)
Have you tried direct network cable to the modem (then running inetwiz)
Can you go to the modem settings page (In IE 192.168.0.1 - or whatever your Modem IP is)

The wireless is active as it works in another computer in my house and as the connection is running on that computer my ISP have said its nothing to do with them and must be with my computer.
I have turned off the firewall on both the laptop and my PC.
I have reset the router several times to no avail. My laptop picks up the connection over LAN and Wireless but it wont allow explorer to go to a website for some reason.I have tried IPCONFIG-Release and IPCONFIG-Renew on both machines to no avail.

This is the result of IPCONFIG/ALL on my PC

first establish that you have connectivity on that pc
see this test sequence

If you can ping your ISP DNS address and use NSLOOKUP www.google.com,
then TCP is fine on that system -- your issue(s) will the the browser or the
firewall.

As I try to load explorer on each machine I see the error 'DNS Error' as the page attempts to load before going onto 'page cannot be displayed' page.

I can get both machines to connect to the internet through the router although the PC is a bit tempermental but the Laptop is a constant connection so Im unaware as to why I cant open up any web pages.

There is very low activity when my PC states it is connected to the internet compared to my klaptop connect. Packets sent/received are in the tens on the pc but on the laptop they are well into the thousands.

Any help greatly appreciated as this problem is driving me mad.

Ive ran virus checkers and spyware which showed nothing. What else could the problem be with? Would reinstalling internet explorer help (although I have also used Mozilla to try and connect oa website to no avail)

Regards

Steven

yea but the address 169.*.*.* is useless

$gateway is symbolic for your ISP gateway address.
you need to access the router using your browser, login, and then see
the WAN side configuration for the Default Gateway

Ping request could not find host www.google.com. Please check the name and try a

yes, this fails as you don't have a valid IP address, gateway or DNS configuration

I can't see your gateway IP connected

Are you connecting an (patch) ethernet cable from your computer directly to your modem, or are you using USB (Ethernet preferred)

Anyway, referring to your modems IP on your modem documentation or on the PDF on the web for your modem

it is http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (inside Internet Explorer)
the X is your modem IP ie 192.168.0.1

You may also require your default login Admin admin usually or admin password
You will need to find your modem setup details on the web to confirm

I will get the modems IP from IPCONFIG/ALL?

I connect through Wireless to a router on both machines but neither will load a webpage for some reason.
There is another computer in another room which has connectivity no problem from the same router.

So Im not sure if I have a software fault on my PC and Laptop or if there is a problem with settings. As the connection worked previous before on my PC I cannot see why there is a problem with my computer now and opening up webpages.

The last thing I can remember my machine doing after I shut it down when I had no problem with connecting to the internet was installing an update on the machine. When I restarted I then had this problem. It cant be the router as it works on another machine and previous I had a connection no problem and the machine connects now but you cant open up any webpages. So its either a hardware fault with my ethernet? Or a software problem?

As for my laptop it has recently been formatted and it has problems opening up a webpage. It connects to the internet connect both through a lan cable and wireless perfectly but upon trying to open up a website or run messenger it doesnt happen.

It is very fustrating!

Thanks

Steven

default router address/id/passwd

actually it is an ID/PWD that is not associated with any account on the computer.
it belongs directly to the router and, like the router default address, is different
on every router.
