Sony demos its motion controller, the PlayStation Move

At its GDC keynote today, Sony finally officially revealed its answer to Microsoft's Project Natal: the PlayStation Move. The inelegantly named motion controller will launch in three packages, starting with a standalone controller. Next up is a starter kit with the PlayStation Move, PlayStation Eye, and an unnamed game for under $100. The most expensive will include a PlayStation 3 console, the Move, and the Eye.

The Move's design is identical to the one mocked some weeks back, and the glowing "orb" will be available in can change between four colors. It also has a companion sub-controller with a directional pad and analog stick to provide additional control for menus or games -- kind of like the Nintendo Wii's Nunchuk.

Sony demonstrated the Move with a range of sports titles, including archery, table tennis, and golf, which will be sold as "Sports Champions" -- again, kind of like Wii Sports Resort. Sony also showed it in action with the SOCOM 4 beta, and LittleBigPlanet.

The PlayStation Move should land on shelves alongside Microsoft's Project Natal this fall. It isn't clear how many Move-compatible games will be available at launch, but Sony says virtually every third-party publisher plans to create games for the motion controller.

  1. I wanna call it The Bulb and The Switch!... Not far too surpass wii...

  2. Let's hope it works at least as well as the Wii remotes, because it sure doesn't look as good.

I'm sure they could have come up with a more unique design. I mean they could have made it like a glove or something. Looks a bit too mush like the Wii's Nunchuck.

i agree about the design & your idea, but i guess for some patent issues they just could no't. would have been better with some minimalistic device & more muscle power, like with natal, but i've also seen some special stuffs they could do only with a device added. creating virtual objects out of almost anything.

let's see how it comes out for gaming...

    cheers!

  4. This will probably be interesting but i dont see motion controller be the next big thing... this will never fit fps or rts... It will be fun to use for fps but it will never work as well as a mouse and keyboard or even a console controller

  5. I haven't seen that yet that's why I can't relate. But I guess these two products have similarities and I don't think that there is an infringement. I trust these companies...

Have a nice reading in TechSpot......

  6. Ummm... SOCOM 4 beta? Beta? I think you mean demo, dude.

  7. I love PlayStation but it just seems too similar to Wii. I know they are incorporating more technology and different graphics which are awesome but I'll just have to wait to test it out for myself. It's amazing seeing the game tech race between nintendo, microsoft, and sony. I wonder if another software game maker will just pop up out of the blue and lead the pack.
