AIDA64 is a comprehensive yet streamlined diagnostic and benchmarking suite for Windows designed to assist home users and PC enthusiasts in technical chores such as overclocking, hardware error diagnosis, stress testing, and sensor monitoring. The program is an offspring of AIDA16, AIDA32, and the successor to the widely popular diagnostic utility Lavalys EVEREST that was recently acquired and discontinued by FinalWire.

Long time fans of Everest shouldn't be too concerned about the break up with Lavalys, though. As you can tell from the "AIDA" brand rebirth, development will be led by the suite's original creator and backed my many others that have been working on the project for years. In addition, FinalWire has wisely kept a familiar interface to that of Everest so that its users can find everything in the same intuitive, at-a-glance layout and get to work straight away.

Among its features are 32 and 64-bit benchmarks to measure how fast the computer performs various data processing tasks and mathematical calculations, including memory and cache, CPU performance and disk transfer speeds -- including extensive support for flash based storage. The newest version adds support for Intel's Sandy Bridge processors, all the latest graphics technologies, 64-bit multi-threaded VP8 video encoding, among other things.

Besides benchmarking, AIDA64 supports over 150 sensor devices to measure temperatures, voltages, fan speeds, and power draw, as well as very accurate hardware and software detection capabilities to get a detailed report on your computer's internals in a single place. What's more, FinalWire is looking to accelerate development and provide regular beta and stable updates for those that want to be at the cutting edge of diagnostic tools.

AIDA64 is definitely worthy of a place in your arsenal for testing hardware and keeping your machine in top shape. Unfortunately, no free version is available as was the case with the highly regarded AIDA32 a few years ago, but the kind folks at FinalWire have given us five Extreme Edition licenses (normally $40 each) for our readers. To participate simply leave a comment letting us know you want in and we'll draw five random winners over the weekend.*

  14. "Because none of those three programs allow I/O (memory, harddrive etc.) benchmarking."

Yeah, I noticed that after posting my question. hehe Even so, I just use Crystal Disk Mark and such. It seems the main appeal of this program is not its unique functionality, but the convenience of having one neat GUI instead of 6+ freeware programs.

  24. Best way to determine if a particular piece of software (or a virus or adware) is seriously impacting the performance of your PC is to run these tests often so you have some idea of how fast your system should be performing and if something installed recently is slowing it down.

  25. I never used Everest or heard of AIDA, but I may finally be getting around to overclocking my year-old ASRock MB. This sounds like a good tool to use in the process. Please add me to the drawing. Thanks.
