TechSpot's Product Finder: Our Latest Project

By

On September 26, 2011, 12:52 AM Breaking News

For about a year we've been working behind the scenes on our latest project, the TechSpot Product Finder, a comprehensive up-to-date catalog of tech products. We hope this becomes your next destination to make well-informed decisions when you go out shopping for your next laptop, SSD, monitor, digital camera, HTPC, tablet, or even your next media player.

Think of it as a Metacritic for computer enthusiasts, the Product Finder is divided in five main sections: Computer Hardware, Systems (PCs, Laptops, Tablets), Smartphones, Electronics, and PC Games.

Cameras

Desktop PCs

Keyboards

Laptops

Motherboards

PC Games

Monitors

Printers

Smartphones

Storage

Tablets

Cases

Speakers

Power Supplies

Home Audio & Video

Processors

Routers

TVs

Mice

And More!

We are opening the new section in beta form today, so you can take advantage of it right away. We have yet to write a FAQ explaining some of the internal processing and criteria we use, but for now two things to keep in mind:

1) We give products an average score based on all the reviews we can find for them across the web.

2) We apply a special algorithm to show you the hottest and freshest possible products in each category, so whenever you are looking for "the best camera" to buy, we can come up with answers right away by browsing the first page or two for that product category (*hint: also check out the data filters to narrow down your searches).

As with all beta launches, you may find some stuff is broken. We'll appreciate your help sending us feedback. Our intent is to keep improving the section in the coming weeks and integrate Product Finder data to all the things we do on TechSpot. Thanks again for your support and we hope you enjoy the new section --- see feature highlight screenshots after the jump.

  1. this is a great idea for a great website like techspot

  2. So the deals section doesn't exist? How do you check the recent deals with the product finder?

  3. Fantastic!

  4. Product Finder seems like a good idea it just needs a chance to mature. What happened to the Daily Deal page?

  5. awesome thanks you techspot

  6. Staff

Sorry for that, we will reincorporate our daily deals page later today.

Thanks for all the feedback thus far.

  7. First bug report: When you choose filters (price and rating for me), it works great for the first page, but not for later pages. Also, if I click on a product and then back out of it my filters are gone. Interesting addition to your fine site though!

  8. Add product specs ^^.

  9. This an excelente feature, keep up the good work TechSpot

  10. congratz

    step in the right direction

was looking in the monitor section and find that there is doubling reviews from different reviewers (LG Flatron W2261V)

probably its a copy/paste but should be avoided

    * The Hot Deals page is back, now available from the "Extras" menu, here's a shortcut just in case:

    http://www.techspot.com/deals-hot.html

    * Many of you are asking for advanced filters (screen size in monitors, etc.), which would be great to have and we might work on that eventually, but for now we wanted to launch solid with a handful of good features that will let you research specific products and narrow down on categories using the current filters.

    * We will start filtering out duplicate reviews more aggressively pretty soon.

    * Product specs may be added soon, we are still debating if they are worth having.

    * Pagination + filters are not working right now, we will fix that very soon.

  12. Awesome!

  13. Sort by price is very needed !

This can be discussed but at least a link to the manufacturer site pages giving the specs is a must.

  15. Portal an 89?! How could you?

  16. Oh wow this is a really nice addition to a site I go to everyday lol Awesome job!

  17. Awesome... thanks TS

  18. This looks great TechSpot!

Very well done, but i'll stick to traditional methods and newegg customer reviews.

You're joking right? Noobegg reviews are a joke.

  20. Might wanna keep up with the smartphone section. I just bought the G2x and in the product review up here, a con is it running Froyo and not Gingerbread...this is no longer accurate. Hopefully some people would be smart enough to actually do research, in which they would find this out, but when listing stuff like this, best to keep it up to date. At least that's how I feel. Might be kind of hard for y'all to keep up with everything like that, lol.

  21. Needs a headphones review place.

  22. Staff

@tacobfm, do you mean something like this?

    Headphone/Headset reviews: http://www.techspot.com/products/headsets/

  23. Really cool feature, especially for less tech-savvy people.

Would be nice if you could sort the results, however.

  24. I've noticed you don't have trackballs listed anywhere, even under the mice section. Why are their no ascending and descending options for sorting by price/score? It seems like they are all just thrown at a list without a thought for organization....

  25. Staff

Default sorting is "by popularity" we just don't show how we come up with the result but there is definitely some thought put into it. We'll add sorting by score, price and possibly release date soon.
