Abit KG7-RAID Socket A Motherboard Review

Pros

  • Stable – Despite being combined with a VIA chipset this Motherboard was relatively trouble free. No noticeable crackling with Soundcards either.

  • Onboard ATA 100 IDE RAID controller. This also can be used to provide connectivity for normal IDE devices as well, e.g. DVD Drive, etc.

  • Fast performance provided by support for DDR RAM, Athlon XP CPUs and ATA 100 RAID array.

  • ATA 100 support.

  • Excellent BIOS features & options. Almost everything can be configured here in some way & overclocking is simple with SoftMenu 3.

  • Great manual as you can always expect from Abit.

  • Expect prices to be lowered with availability of KT266A Chipset based motherboards.

Cons

  • Semi-dated by availability of (faster) NVIDIA nForce/VIA KT266A chipset based Motherboards.

Conclusion

Although released (& received ;)) a bit late the Abit KG7 RAID is yet another feather in Abit’s oversized hat. Featuring support for all modern technology you could want – ATA 100 IDE RAID, AGP 4, DDR RAM & of course AMD Duron, Athlon & XP CPUs. It at all runs very stably on Windows XP as well. Perhaps this’ll make a nice stocking filling for someone this Christmas. If you can afford it though then it would be worth looking further into KT266A based Motherboards which offer improved performance (Based on most reviews I’ve seen) on perhaps even an NVIDIA nForce Motherboard.
