ACT Labs Gun System review
Posted by Julio Franco on December 22, 1999 - Page 2/3
Company: ACT Labs     Product: Gun System

Installation

So, I got all the stuff out of the fancy box, as I’m used to see from ACT Labs, these guys even take care of the way everything is packaged, I found two guns, the base unit, the handheld and a few other cables and the power supply.

Along with the hardware, the GS came with a nice installation manual, which will guide you through all the installation process; anyway we aren’t talking of a complicated thing here.

First I had to connect the VGA adaptor to a VGA pass-through box that came with the GS, and then connect the extension of the box to my video card. Then it’s all about connecting the power adaptor and the guns or the handheld to the base and you are done.

The drivers that came in the CD were a bit dated but ACT had already informed me that new drivers had been released (I used version 1.02 for testing). After the drivers installation, the GS was recognized correctly in the Game Controllers menu and I was ready for calibration, this only took about a minute.

Of course, so you have got the hardware but what about game support?

The list of games that currently support the GS is kind of short, currently includes Top Shot (the game that comes bundled), Deer Hunter III and there are also available patches for a few first person shooters including Quake II and  Half-Life, actually the guys behind these patches aren’t ACT Labs but the guys over at Glitterstream.net, I have no idea if they have some kind of deal with ACT but they have done a good work with the mods for both FPS games.

ACT Labs has got a page with word on the upcoming games that should support the GS including the following:
