ASUS P3V4X motherboard review

PC Probe

The Asus software bundle contains a monitoring utility called PC Probe. This can be used to monitor temperature of your system & other settings. A very useful tool for overclockers indeed. This can be setup to give warnings when your system reaches certain temperatures & so on too.

It’s a nice addition to the motherboard itself, particularly if you intend to, or are overclocking your system.

Pros

  • Quite stable, almost perfectly so with the latest VIA drivers installed (Windows 98 SE & Windows 2000).

  • Significantly improved memory bandwidth compared to earlier/other VIA 133A based motherboards, e.g. the Abit VT6X4.

  • Decent software bundle, particularly the PC Probe.

  • Support for PC 133 RAM (& the option to run RAM at different speed than the FSB), 133Mhz FSB & AGP4.

Cons

  • New I815 based motherboards such as the Asus CUSL2 offer better performance than VIA 133A based motherboards.

  • Reported issues with AGP4 mode & nVidia GeForce cards (not working properly). Although AGP1/2 works fine with them.

Conclusion

The Asus P3V4X is a very nice motherboard indeed, although with the availability of i815 based motherboards the P3V4X may not be the best choice for a new motherboard. Still, it’s very stable & overclocks well.

It also supports all the latest hardware & features, such as AGP4.
