DDR SDRAM shoot out: Crucial PC2100 vs. OCZ Performance PC2400

Availability

Unlike the OCZ Titan I reviewed a short time ago, OCZ memory seems to be rather more widely available. Of the nine American retailers marked up to distribute OCZ RAM, eight had it directly available and the ninth had a vague description of DDR memory that might or might not have been OCZ. Prices ranged from $21.95 to $55.00, with a favourite seeming to be $32.99. None of the international distributors had OCZ memory listed on their sites.

The challenge with Crucial memory however is finding a computer retailer that does not stock it (or also available directly from them). Prices range from $27 to $44, but mostly $29.69. Unlike OCZ RAM, Crucial is widely available internationally as well as in America.

Conclusion

There’s not much in it, but the OCZ RAM seems to offer slightly superior performance for a similar price (presuming the rest of my system would have allowed a FSB of over 120Mhz). The Crucial memory however is generally cheaper, and of course the memory is more reputable. You can’t really go wrong with either memory though; both are inexpensive and allow for practically all the FSB overclocking the average system can take. The only big failure of Crucial that I can find is that overclocking invalidates the warranty (but I won’t tell them I overclocked if you won’t). There is no mention of this on OCZ's site. Go and buy either of these memory sticks while they’re so cheap!
