Diamond XtremeSound 7.1 DDL soundcard review

--

Software and Drivers

The Drivers/Control Panel is functional, though curiously dated in appearance. Of course, for the price you shouldn’t be expecting the aesthetics that you can find with the Creative X-Fi software. The Main Setting tab allows you to configure Audio output mode:

When connected to a Dolby Digital decoder it is recommended to enable S/PDIF output with DDL (5.1) Encoding, this is after all, the reason you would buy the DDL version over the plain version of this soundcard, which is cheaper, too.

Those interested in 3D virtualization have Xear 3D. As I have previously stated this is not something I personally enjoy as I prefer playback to best represent the original source.

Also of note, in non-DDL S/PDIF output multiple Sampling Rates can be selected (44.1kHz, 48kHz and 96kHz), which may be of use to some. Beyond S/PDIF output the soundcard supports up to of 8-channel Analog Output.

Here are some screenshots of the standard Mixer tab:

And the Effects tab:

The 10-band Equaliser may prove useful for many and includes multiple presets. Perhaps less useful is the ability to select an environmental preset to apply to audio playback (most EAX supporting soundcards offer this feature also).
