ACT Labs Force RS review
Posted by Julio Franco on August 30, 1999 - Page 3/3

Summarizing all the features of the Force RS (which stands for Racing System) we have got:

- Immersion I-Force technology
- Program custom force-feedback effects using our software
- Rubber steering wheel overlay
- 7 buttons on wheel face
- 8-way D-pad (mounted middle)
- F1 style gear shifter
- Gas / brake pedal system
- 270 degree turning radius
- 6 foot cable length
- Windows 95 compatible (Not DOS compatible)
- Pedal base: No tip, no slippage
- Vertical gas pedal
- Horizontal brake pedal
- Effective slider clamping system
- Cartridge system for multi-platform support

Ok, let’s get the games started…

The first game I tried was the one that came with the Force RS, Need for Speed III, I really liked the sensation of playing it with a wheel, tight turns could be easily managed and the force feedback effects were awesome, although I think crashes should be felt a bit harder, other things like racing off-road and driving on a wood bridge felt very realistic.

I also tried Midtown Madness, at first glance, response of the wheel was poor and it felt horrible but after playing a bit with the settings I started enjoying it a lot, much better than with a gamepad, force feedback effects here aren’t spectacular but it felt nice anyway.

Other than those games I tried Speed Busters and Monaco Grand Prix RS 2, both games support Force Feedback effects, again it felt too nice. In general terms, in most of the games I had to tweak settings to get a perfect experience, also it took me a while to get used to it, but after all it was totally worth it.

Just in case I went back to my old good Microsoft Sidewinder gamepad but after the Force RS, I felt playing racing games without it was unacceptable.

The Force RS is an excellent product, maybe the best wheel out there for its comfort and upgradability and its one of the cheapest ones, if you have got the $139 you have to pay for it, go and buy it, you won’t be sorry.
