Hollywood Plus DVD decoder review
Posted by Thomas McGuire on September 21, 2000 - Page 4/7
Company: Sigma Designs     Product: Hollywood Plus DVD Decoder

Here’s the next pair of shots, the first one from Cinemaster 99, the other from Hollywood Plus. In particular, pay close attention to the Matrix logo & the menu selection text.

As you can clearly see from these shots, the Hollywood Plus has the far superior image quality. The software decoder gives a more blurred image in this case, while the Hollywood Plus image is perfect. Notice how crisp & clear the text & Matrix logo appear in the Hollywood Plus shot.

Again, another shot from The Matrix. First picture from Cinemaster 99, the second using the Hollywood Plus.

Little difference can be seen from these 2 shots, although on close inspection you may notice that the gratings to the right of the picture are a little better defined with the Hollywood Plus, the reflective surface above the gratings also has a faint line or 2 which should be visible (near the end of it), although these can’t be seen using the software decoder.

Now for the final pair of shots. Again, the first picture is from Cinemaster 99, the second using the Hollywood Plus. In particular, pay attention to the area to the left of the wall (centre of the screen or thereabouts).

As you can see the Cinemaster 99 image appears more jagged, particularly in the aforementioned area of the pictures (left of centre). The man walking towards the screen appears slightly more blurred in Cinemaster & the building directly behind appears very jagged.

In my opinion after viewing some films again using Power DVD, Cinemaster 99, WinDVD 2000 & the Hollywood Plus I can safely say that the Hollywood Plus has a superior image quality to all of these players. For a full listing of movies viewed see the Review Material section.
