Mouse round-up: Logitech, Microsoft and Razer mice compared

--

Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse Explorer w/Tilt Wheel

On a cheaper approach to a high-end wireless mouse, you have the Wireless Intellimouse Explorer with tilt wheel technology from Microsoft.  Obviously not as precise as the Logitech MX1000, this fourth generation mouse would be a good recommendation to users that want wireless capabilities for a lower price. Although Microsoft offers a few different versions of the Wireless Intellimouse, including a leather sporting version, the device on its simplest form can be had for slightly more than $20 from online vendors such as Newegg and ZipZoomFly.

Something I disliked about Microsoft’s offering was the very limited wireless range.  If I put the mouse more than two feet away from the computer, it started losing signal. That may be enough for most people under normal usage conditions but we would definitely like to see refined wireless capabilities in a fourth generation product.

As someone that has tendonitis, I found that the mouse is ergonomic enough for using several hours before it gets uncomfortable.  The mouse fit well in my hand, and was easy to use and grasp. Arguably the best feature and most noticeable, is the tilt wheel technology.  This new technology allows you to scroll through oversized websites or excel sheets horizontally.

For a reliable and sturdy mouse that is easy to install, cost effective, and will do all things required of a regular mouse reliably, this is the perfect choice.

Pros:

  •  Ergonomic

  •  Side-to-side scrolling

  •  Tilt-wheel scrolling

  •  Cost effective

Cons:

  •  Movement can sometimes skip

  •  Lacking wireless range

Final Thoughts

Unfortunately, regardless of intended use, mice are one of the most overlooked computer peripherals.  We just took a good look at a variety of mice, including some of the best choices available in the market today, and so we hope our impressions will help you in a potential buying decision.

As you will come to expect, both Razer mice and Logitech MX518 are great for gaming but I wouldn't say they are my top choice for people that aren't heavy video game players.  For more of an everyday mouse, I would recommend Microsoft’s Wireless Intellimouse Explorer or the Logitech MX1000.

We saw the good - Razer Diamondback, Logitech MX1000, the bad - Optical Mouse by S+ARCK, the moderate - Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse Explorer and Viper, and the stellar - Logitech MX518…

Best Mouse Overall:  Logitech MX 1000

Best Bang for the Buck:  Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse Explorer

Best Gaming Mouse: Logitech MX518

Best Precision and Responsiveness:  Logitech MX 1000

If there is one thing for sure, it is that we can hopefully expect to see great things from Microsoft, Logitech, and Razer in the future. To give you a good example, Logitech just announced last week the development of a new series of products catered to gamers only.
