The Revolution 7.1
represents another success for
M-Audio. As a consumer oriented soundcard it delivers on
all fronts, sound quality is probably the best you’re likely
to find for the price and the package includes a quality
software bundle that sweetens the deal with something that
should appeal to everyone (that’d be WinDVD 4 in my case).
Unlike the
Audigy 2 it’s also not particularly hindered by
resampling issues if you configure it correctly.
On the drivers front,
while not entirely perfect it’s certainly no worse than
you’ll find with most other soundcards, providing a much
newer Sensaura build as well as MultiDrive 5.1 support was a
great plus. For gaming support though, it is worth noting
the CPU usage of the Revolution, which will likely leave its
performance behind that of gaming oriented soundcards.
Still, if you’re not a hardcore gamer this won’t be much of
an issue and the high quality music and DVD playback more
than compensates.
M-Audio has in their
hands a soundcard that I could recommend over the
Audigy 2 if gaming was not of much importance,
the Revolution 7.1 deserves our Outstanding product
recognition.
