Performance
Other
sites have extensively covered this area. New driver
releases have actually improved Vortex 2 soundcards CPU
utilization & game performance. Aureal is making some
nice improvements in this area; some games have had problems
though, currently the Unreal Tournament demo tends to
experience slowdown with 3D Hardware support for A3D
enabled. EAX is fine although not quite as nicely
implemented.
Half-Life
is currently the best retail game with 3d sound support,
both EAX & A3D 2.0 are perfectly implemented with the
latest drivers & patch for the game.
Overall
performance is now similar (& in some cases better) than
the Sound Blaster Live.
Conclusion
This
card is truly a gamers card. If you use your PC for not much
else other than play games, especially those with A3D 2.0
support, you should definitely purchase this card.
Positional Audio in games is far superior to its EAX
counterpart.
To
those who do more than play games, this may not be the best
choice. I really wish I could have given this card a higher
mark, but its intended solely for games & little else.
Those seeking that bit more should be looking at the Sound
Blaster Live (& Live Value) instead.
Those
on budget would also want to take a look at this card.
