Microsoft Trackball Explorer review

Conclusion

The Microsoft Trackball Explorer certainly looks the part, and is probably the sexiest peripheral I have ever seen, if those two words can be used in the same sentence. However this costs. The Trackball Explorer is currently retailing for £50 ($75), which is almost three times the price of equivalent Kensington trackballs.

The four main buttons with a “normal” scroll wheel are definitely a bonus, however I feel Microsoft would have done a lot better if they had made the device have a secondary button that is actually a reasonable size, rather than a decent sized primary one, and three other tiny ones. The use of Intellieye movement sensing diodes ensures that the device does not suffer from the problem of skin building up on the rollers and crippling the device (as is common with practically all other trackballs), but in the same way the movement is a little on the loose side and takes a while to get used to. The Trackball Explorer marginally misses out on an outstanding product award.

Pros:

  • Fluid movement

  • Very comfortable

  • Easy on the eye

Cons:

  • Expensive

  • Small secondary, tertiary & quatrain buttons
