Kensington Turboball review
Posted by Adam Klein on April 14, 2000 - Page 3/4
Company: Kensington     Product: Turboball trackball

Software

Windows does not support more than three mouse buttons, so thats why when you have 5 buttons it is required to have the software package the device came with to take advantage of the added buttons. The software the Turboball came with is what Kensington calls MouseWorks.

After using the MouseWorks software package, I was impressed. This program is very feature rich, it allows you to assign funtions to the buttons, control cursor speed, set it for the left or right hand, control acceleration and much much more. This program basically lets you control every aspect of the trackball.

There were a couple things I didn't like about the software.  One of the most important would be its program compatibility. I had a few games that would crash when one of the software driven buttons was pressed. This program is good for those who use word processors and spreadsheets, or people that just surf the net.

There is also a bit of lag between the depression of the buttons and what is actually going on when using the MouseWorks software..  This, as you know, is definitely not good to have in a game. The software just isn't tuned for games. I find the best solution for this is to just not use the MouseWorks software. That would leave the 5th button useless, but you don't have to worry about crashes and the movement would be more responsive.
