27.3 GB Hard Drive
Performance
Benchmarks
On
the benchmark side, I decided to use the best benchmark for
testing HDs, Winbench 99. Winbench produces the most
accurate results than from any other program, but I decided
to use some easy and quick benchmarks for users who don’t
want to sit though the hour of Winbench testing. For this, I
used SiSoft Sandra and HD Tach 2.60.
SiSoft
Sandra showed that this drive was indeed faster then an
8.4GB drive. The 8.4GB results were a littler faster then
what I got on the Maxtor drives though, but were very close.
SiSoft isn’t 100% reliable though, since the results vary
every time you benchmark.

For
Winbench, I chose to use the results I recorded a week prior
to benchmarking the 27.3GB drive. The 8.4GB drive was blown
away in terms of performance. This shows a strong statement
to those who say you don’t need a drive as large as
27.3GB. It’s not all about size; it’s also about
performance.

HD
Tach may not be totally correct when determining the
performance you will see out of a hard drive. For example,
the burst rate it shows is the highest attained, not
constant. The average transfer rate, on the other hand,
gives a good result for constant transfer rates.
