Here is some information you should be aware of:

Understanding and Configuring User Account Control in Windows Vista

Understanding and Working in Protected Mode Internet Explorer

These are important parts of the Vista operating system. You need to be aware of them as you may need to make a change in one or both at some time- even if not for this problem.

Use the Event Viewer in Vista to find the Error that corresponds to the time you get the message:
So I have to do it again for it to really start loading the page which then after a long wait ends in a "this webpage cannot be displayed" message.

Events are time coded, so note time on computer clock when you get this message, then look for corresponding Error at that time:

To access the Event Viewer:
Start> Run> type in eventvwr

Path to follow in Vista: http://www.windowsvistauserguide.com/event_viewer.htm

was able to log on the first & second page of Model mayhem after waiting for about 2 minutes each page to load then it would not load after that.

The fact that this is happening indicates the internet connection may be the problem, not the sites.

There are tools available in the operating system that you need to be aware of. These tools can help you troubleshoot nag problems like this.

Thanks Bobbye for posting the UAC and prtective mode guide,

I am aware we cant copy paste in the forum, And I just didn't have time to type up one of my own.

I'm sorry I didn't mention it in my first post, but I already tried Firefox and the exact same thing happens.

Bobbye,

Thank you for posting the links. I will do some reading and then post the information from the event log after I figure out how to do it. The thing that is the most puzzling is that the other computer on the same network works fine for both sites.

BTW: The User Account Control link is not working for me. It says website cannot be displayed.
The event log seems pretty complex. Is there a particular portion I should be looking at?

You're welcome, Kevork. Google is my friend!

The User Account Control link is not working for me

Old dopey me! I forgot to put the link in for UAC. Try it now.

Rockindaddy, the problem has to be a specific setting on that machine. I'd have you check to make sure it isn't blocked, but if it was, it wouldn't load at all.

I went back and check the Mbam log again. I asked you about this previously and you indicated it was intentional:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Low Rights\RunDll32Policy\f3ScrCtr.dll (Adware.MyWebSearch) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

Do you have this setting on the other machine? The f3ScrCtr.dll is related to the MyWebSearch. IF the malware has lowered the rights, that may be what is preventing access.

Run this online scan and attach log in next reply:
Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus Scanner HERE

Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the Active X control to install
  • Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notification Tray icon near the clock.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Re-enable your Antivirus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.

Hi Bobbye,

I checked the other computer and that setting is NOT on the other machine. In fact I don't even know how that setting got on my machine, nor do I know how to change it. I did the Eset scan and attached the log. Although I never saw a "Scan unwanted applications" button. I did uncheck the "remove found threats" button. The only other button I saw was "scan archives'. I did not check that one when I did the scan.

Okay, the online scan is clean. You need to elevate the rights on the problem machine. I'm going to send you to the Windows OS forum for that. But I suggest you read about the UAC on the link I left. You may get enough information to do it. I don't have Vista and I'm not experienced in dealing with this.

See if you can figure it out with these directions:
User Account Control Step-by-Step Guide

If you can't, start a new thread over there- you might want to make subject something like "How to elevate rights on Vista." You can describe that malware lowered the rights and you can't access some sites.

Let's remove the cleaning tools and old restore points:
Remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created
  • DownloadOTCleanIt by OldTimer
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes.

If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.

You should now set a new Restore Point to prevent infection from any previous Restore Points. The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the Restore Point a name then click "Create". The new Restore Point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Go to "Disk Cleanup" which can be found by going to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools.
  • Click "OK" to select the partition or drive you desire.
  • Click the "More Options" Tab.
  • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous Restore Points except the newly created one.
