In context: New Save Collective's gaming campaign is grounded in both personal experience and empirical research tracking anti-immigrant disinformation in online spaces. The team's decision to use games is deliberate, informed by their data-driven understanding of how these platforms shape narratives and public sentiment around immigration issues. Looking ahead, organizers plan to deepen their involvement in digital activism, leveraging virtual worlds as spaces for civic engagement and education.

A new wave of digital activism is emerging inside the world's most popular video games. In a recent demonstration, the New Save Collective – a team of 13 activists and organizers from diverse immigrant backgrounds – used the role-play mod for Grand Theft Auto V to simulate real-life immigration enforcement scenarios, aiming to educate gamers on asserting their rights during encounters with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

SteveTheGamer55, who has over 4.6 million YouTube subscribers, streamed the session live to an international audience. Viewers watched as he navigated his character, an immigrant worker on a visa, through surprise ICE raids carried out by players role-playing as agents.

In one scenario, his character was confronted, interrogated, and surrounded before ultimately being released, while bystanders – also controlled by players – challenged the agents and demanded accountability. The session included staged scenes near virtual gates designed to resemble real-world detention centers.

The initiative represents the New Save Collective's first major outing. The group has partnered with immigration advocacy organizations and gaming content creators with the goal of transforming games into platforms for public education, reaching audiences who might otherwise remain untouched by traditional activism.

Building on their momentum, the Collective organized a closed scavenger hunt event in Fortnite, inviting players from across the country to participate in interactive lessons about immigrant rights and digital community building. Future events are planned across multiple gaming environments.

For years, authorities and political groups have used online gaming spaces for messaging, recruitment, and even spreading ideology. The US military has publicized its recruitment campaigns within games, and the Department of Homeland Security recently embraced gaming culture in its social media outreach.

DHS issued posts referencing the iconic Halo series with slogans like "Destroy the Flood," alongside content emulating Pokémon's "Gotta catch 'em all" catchphrase, paired with footage of ICE operations. In response to criticism, DHS stated that its game-inspired messaging is designed to reach people "where they are," whether through Halo, Pokémon, or other popular media.

New Save Collective fundamentally rejects the use of gaming platforms to promote harassment or exclusion – a trend that has long plagued online communities, particularly since the Gamergate controversy. Instead, the group focuses on building relationships and empowering individuals through digital organizing. Most members are themselves immigrants or descendants of refugees, driving a mission centered on belonging and shared purpose, organizer PitaBreadFace explained to Wired.

The evolving demographics of the gaming landscape reveal that progressive institutions have been slower to establish a presence compared to right-leaning or more toxic factions. New Save Collective seeks to close that gap by leveraging gaming's social features to unite communities and foster meaningful discourse.

In interviews with Wired, organizers described how role-play events in GTA and scavenger hunts in Fortnite provide practical opportunities for participants – many of whom may never have witnessed ICE-related encounters – to experience such scenarios firsthand and learn about their rights as citizens, bystanders, and immigrants.

Such events are not isolated. Other games, including Roblox, have hosted rallies and protests, with young players gathering for causes such as pro-Palestinian solidarity and anti-ICE demonstrations. New Save Collective sees similar potential in the vast social networks of GTA and Fortnite, where some role-playing participants bring real-world expertise as lawyers or police officers.

The challenge, however, is countering misinformation and hostile actors. Organizers have encountered individuals impersonating ICE agents to spread false narratives and undermine the group's efforts. To address this, onboarding processes screen participants before educational activities begin.

Partner organization Define American is deeply involved in the project, supporting research-backed strategies to shift how immigrants are depicted in digital media. Shauna Siggelkow, the group's vice president of programs, emphasized that changing public attitudes toward immigration fundamentally requires transforming the discourse in popular culture. She argued that fostering an understanding of legal rights is critical – not just for immigrants, but for all participants in these digital communities.

Good use of gaming technology. What's often forgottten today is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. If that document were satisfied for every human, the world would, conceivably, be a place of joy. But it is not, so the world is a place of misery.

Modern propaganda from any direction is so lame and lazy. Look at you photoshopping your opinions!

People used to paint and draw some really gripping stuff, now the best we get is recycled video game marketing.

This pile of money and data driven garbage is stacking itself further away from legitimate humanity by the day.

I can’t help noticing that the techniques described—scripted scenarios, emotionally charged narratives, and tightly curated environments—carry a real risk of steering participants toward a single interpretation of very complex issues. To me, that sounds a lot like indoctrination, even if that isn’t the intent.

This kind of guided experience, even when framed as educational, seems more likely to narrow perspective than to foster genuine understanding. It’s a shaping of how players feel and think through immersion rather than open inquiry.

Honestly, my issue with this description isn’t the stated goal, but the method employed. Any approach that simplifies reality, controls the narrative, or subtly channels participants toward one conclusion mirrors the same psychological mechanisms used by all extremist politics, both left and right. In my view, these techniques suppress individual reasoning, discourage critical debate, and encourage unexamined alignment with a particular worldview. That’s a toxic method regardless of intent and undermines any claim of education—which requires critical thinking.

Dumbing down complexity or steering people toward a single “correct” interpretation isn’t education. And I honestly struggle to see this effort as anything near a showcasing of the moral high ground when they’re utilizing the same playbook of corrosive influence their political opposition does.

Who gives a ****?
I could give a few, but I strongly believe this is one issue that can never be resolved by politicians, who in fact created the problem. It is the kind of issue that's there to grow until it blows into your face through public outrage, and from thence to violence and civil war against the invaders.

ILLEGAL Immigrants Rights ! HA what a joke. America for Americans and those that are becoming American the legal way. The rest? They protest against the USA, wave foreign flags but won't leave

Break into America or violate the terms of your visa and suddenly half of this country wants to instantly give you thousands of dollars, per month, in perpetuity, in taxpayer-funded benefits, no questions asked.

Hate how expensive yet ineffective public services have become, how incomes have stagnated (but not for the billionaires who want to save a few bucks on gardening), how increasingly more people competing for the same number of homes has predictably, led to housing shortages and therefore rent increases, or how consistent cultural usurpation has effectuated societal destabilization especially when there are now 90 different languages or sets of values which, funnily enough, only a single group in America is actually expected to respect? Well, tough.

Using a violent felony simulator to cry about ICE is very on point for tone deaf activists.

I wish ideologs could just pick a lane and stay in it. Is the US some forth world hellhole run by Cheeto musolini, or is it this wonderful mecca that's so great they want tens of millions flooding across the border and into their lives? You can't have both.

Here’s what I’ve noticed: they say they love America, but when you ask them if they love Americans, specifically, who actually constitutes an “American”, the “America is a country of immigrants!1!1!” cope comes out.

The reality?

America was settled by Anglo and Western Imperialists (as there was no country here before America to conquer) whose descendants founded and constituted this country, using a very specific set of principles derived largely from Protestant and Calvinist thought. We were more a nation of relatives than anything; more than 99% of America’s “immigrants” (up until the passing of the Hart-Cellar act in the 1960s) were just other Westerners moving from one Western country to another, largely preserving those same foundational values which originally constituted this country. If we lose those values, be it through limitless ingress or anti-Western propaganda, we will no longer be the meritocratic nation everybody is so desperate to move to, and ignoring this fact or attempting to deflect away from it is evidence of malice at this point.

I completely disagree with locking the comments section just because it's a sensitive issue. The actual post is specifically about a sensistive issue.
I personally prefer PC gaming because it isn't controlled like the console games are and I appreciate people who take the time to mod games and make those mods publicly available. That's how we got Counter Strike, Unreal: Strike Force and countless map add ons.

That said: Trump is doing something I always knew was "legal" or "constitutionally sanctioned". Removing illegal immigrants has always been done - and now the country sees that we actually need these people as our birth rates decline thanks to feminism and our construction declines - leaving those people claiming we need new home inventory to rise unable to square the removal of said immigrants with any plan forward.

I welcome the new technology, more realistic AI-generated graphics and scripted sequences.

If I knew anything about coding or game making, I'd be doing this myself about the most sensitive issues I could.

It is very easy to be endlessly generous if you do not pay yourself and your kindness is a heavy burden on someone else's shoulders.
My blood boils when I think about all the malicious people putting our kids in danger while some very "kind" activists explain why it is so important for those people to be here.

The elephant in the room is that European settlers were themselves immigrants in North America.

Immigrants have the same rights as everyone else.

Illegal aliens, who have absolutely nothing to do with Immigrants, have rights in their respective countries of birth.
In order to protect their rights, the illegal aliens should be immediately returned.

Gaming has now become somewhat trash. Gaming should be fun and non-politicized. For a brief moment you want to play to forget the daily rigorous of life but I guess some don't want it that way anymore. If they're not happy they don't want you to have fun and be happy too. As they say misery loves company.

Awww what an amazing and achingly sweet fairy tale!!

"Some" people conveniently forget to mention that America then wasn't an empty continent waiting to be occupied. There were ca. 100 million natives from hundreds of native Indian tribes. Their land was violently and forcibly taken away from them by the "peaceful" squatters. Not to mention the introduction of diseases (sometimes as a weapon of war) the natives had no immunity against. Genocide?? Nah, just a coincidence even when done willfully.

And the sweet Sci-Fi post completely forgets slavery. Those squatters needed people to work the land and make them rich and brutal slavery was the answer.

But hey, implicit and explicit ignorance and whitewashing history is so normal these days in this country.

You cant be an illegal human.

They are undocumented. The difference between documented and undocumented, paperwork. Being undocumented is a civil offense, not criminal. The president is more of a criminal than a undocumented immigrant.

Good talk.

And yes, undocumented immigrants have rights guaranteed by the constitution. Teaching immigrants their rights is always a good thing unless you are trying to do something illegal to them...

Its crazy generations grew up in America saying their pledge of allegiance every day which includes "Liberty and justice for all" and when you expect that now days, its like "liberty and justice for all non brown people".

Well, in GTA, everyone is a criminal, guilty of murder and more... There are no good guys.
thats not true. I infiltrate gangs in GTA and teach passiveness and Jesus. I join the deathmatches and instead of shooting, I preach and teach the word of Christ in hopes to convert some satanists to the good side.

I dont pit maneuver my lambo into anyone, I pit maneuver bible quotes to help them see the light!
