Amazon has announced it will launch a new category in the Kindle Store for content that is, in the company’s words, “twice the length of a New Yorker feature or as much as a few chapters of a typical book.” The company named the new section Kindle Singles and is calling on writers, business people, politicians and other big thinkers to make their works available to readers around the world. Their reasoning is that “ideas and the words to deliver them should be crafted to their natural length, not to an artificial marketing length that justifies a particular price or a certain format.”

Amazon characterized Kindle Singles as 10,000 to 30,000 word pieces (roughly 30 to 90 pages) that will be priced much lower than a typical book. These can include anything from short novels, long pamphlets, extended journal articles, an essay on a current event and other type of content that hasn’t typically been a central part of the publishing model. The move basically opens up a market for content that may not ever be traditionally printed, and Amazon obviously sees a potentially lucrative revenue stream in offering these shorter pieces form a new breed of self-publishing authors.

Titles will be readable on every platform that Amazon currently supports, including its own Kindle readers and mobile devices like iPads. That said, there's no word on when the new service will launch or exactly how much 'Singles' will cost.
