Editor's take: Fallout has the potential to be massive, but these sort of things are tough to get right. Halo was in a similar position recently but by most accounts, the first season came up short on Paramount+. Can Amazon do Fallout justice?
Amazon's live-action television adaptation of Fallout will hit Prime Video in 2024, the e-commerce giant recently confirmed on Twitter.
We first learned that Amazon had licensed the rights to Fallout in mid-2020, and recruited Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy to lead the project. Nolan and Joy are perhaps best known as the showrunners for Westworld, the HBO series from 2016 that was based on the 1973 film by the same name.
Westworld's first season was an absolute masterpiece but most agree that it went downhill from there. The first season has a score of 87 percent from critics and an audience score of 93 percent over on Rotten Tomatoes. By the fourth season, the scores fell to 75 percent and 55 percent, respectively.
Amazon's latest teaser confirms the series will be set in Los Angeles with events focused around Vault 33. During Gamescom, Bethesda's Todd Howard and Microsoft's Phil Spencer shared a minute-long preview of the series. The clip was shown during a presentation for Starfield, with Howard saying they had no plans to put it online. It's the age of smartphones and the Internet, however, so of course someone recorded the snippet and uploaded it to YouTube.
The potato-quality video isn't going to set the world on fire, but at least we get to see what those in attendance saw. A handful of images from the show's set have also leaked on the Internet over the past year or so, and they are arguably more compelling than the Gamescom teaser.
Howard has been approached by movie producers for more than a decade about bringing Fallout to the big screen, but he always turned them down as it was never the right fit. Howard eventually reached out to Nolan about the franchise, and he agreed to help make a show.
