AMD's new Zen 6 chips will have a low-power core built from five different generations of Zen

I think everyone is missing the point that AMD has basically took all the bloat out and still kept a functional modern X86 CPU Core that is as small as possible and is clocked as low as possible whilst still being functional. It's the same as Sony stripping stuff out of the Zen2 cores for the PS5 to make it as lean but functional as possible to save on die space.

Windows Scheduler would likely idle on this core with no issues and then clock the full cores down to their lowest values. Clearly the idea is for portable devices in mind and nothing else. Whether this works as they expect it to is to be seen but if this 1 core uses 1w< max then it's achieving what it set out to achieve.

AMD used to say Intel's hybrid Power/Efficiency cores added unnecessary scheduling and software complexity, but we all learn as we go along.

Yes. And this is still true. Hence why the article talks about software needs to adapt to take full advantage of these cores. Hopefully this happens, as using existing tech in new ways can be very cost effective. Whether that gets passed on to us consumers is another story.

We don't know how this will play out yet. It is possible the Zen6 performance cores are very, very good. Rumours suggest. If you have 8 cores that are faster than anything else right now, and then add these "efficiency cores" on top. As long as they don't deteriorate performance in normal PC enviroments, no one will care. Also, if they do prove efficient in laptops and handheld devices, it can be a win win.

The same ISa as Zen 6 the 2 pump 256bit FPU instead of 512 but FPU there is little performance difference until people start coding for 512 but uses less power the memory configuration optimised for lower through put.

It is a waste of precious (silicon) space on desktop, you give up a lot (~50%) of performance per core to save 1-2W of power.

These efficiency cores can make a lot of difference on a mobile chip, but on desktop you will never notice the difference, especially if you have a power guzzling GPU humming next to you CPU.
