Proving that its early success wasn’t just a fluke, Rovio has announced that Angry Birds Space has surpassed the 50 million download mark. It took only three days for the title to reach 10 million downloads and just over one calendar month (32 days to be exact) to amass another 40 million installs.

Rovio claims that surpassing the 50 million download tally in such a short time makes Angry Birds Space the fastest growing mobile game ever, breaking all of the company’s previous records.

We extend our deepest gratitude to all fans of Angry Birds everywhere. While numbers like this certainly say something about the popularity of Angry Birds, for us the main goal is to keep creating fun new experiences that everybody can enjoy! There's only one conclusion to draw: something even bigger is on its way! Stay tuned and keep flinging those Birds!

The game launched (no pun intended) on March 22 with a marketing campaign typically reserved for Hollywood blockbuster films. The mobile gaming giant partnered with Walmart, NASA, T-Mobile, National Geographic and MTV to promote the new title and even hoisted a 35-foot tall Angry Bird onto the side of the Space Needle in Seattle.

At one point, Rovio turned down an acquisition offer from Zynga valued at more than $2 billion. Given the success of the Angry Birds franchise, declining such a lucrative offer was likely a good idea on the part of Rovio.

60 levels were available at launch with Rovio recently releasing 10 additional stages free of charge for Android and iOS. PC and Mac users can get in on the action as well, although bonus stages haven’t yet been released for those platforms. The game sells for $0.99 in the iTunes store and is available free of charge (albeit ad-supported) on Android.
