Apple finally pulls back the curtain on its tablet, iPad

A mistake on the part of Apple here I think. I would have been far more impressed with the iPad if it was running a full blown OS, Snow Leopard for example. This is very much a large screen iPhone/ipod.

Very very disappointed.

I'm pretty disappointed. I've been on the market for a laptop for past several months and was hoping to see something interesting from Apple. Right now it's nothing but a big iPhone. Even though I hate typing anything longer than a sentence on iPhone, at least it's portable. This thing loses portability and doesn't add anything but a big screen. Business travel? Give me a break - I'm not doing anything business related on any device unless it has a fully functional keyboard and can have 2-3 applications open at the same time. There was a good reason for old time tablet PCs - they combined touch screen with fully functional keyboard so the user could have best of both worlds - a relatively compact device when you need it and full keyboard and normal OS when serious work needs to be done.

At this point, I'd rather buy a netbook. Less style, but at least multi-tasking is possible.

I've never been a fan of Apple, but I have to admit that I can see many people adopting this as their main interaction with the internet at home. It may not be a full OS X implementation, but it will do all that the home consumer would want, it seems like a "social" computer.

So well done to Apple

Sadly, as lame and underwhelming as the iPad appears to be, it will probably still get decent sales. There are far too many Appleheads with too much loyalty and excess discretionary income. They tend to drink whatever kool-aid the almighty Steve-o mixes up for them, and they have to run out and buy the "next great thing" that Apple puts out.

Honestly, though, there is a small part of me that likes the basic premise. A nice slick pad that can do ebooks but also some games and video and such, and has the ability to have some interesting applications developed for it. But no multitasking and tying it to AT&T's already crappy 3G service (that they like to blame on the iPhone being a data hog) just make the entire thing lackluster in my eyes. And, of course, in the Apple tradition it is way overpriced for what you are getting.

you could (with coupon) buy 13'' Lenovo X201 for like 700-800 bucks

iPad is overpriced POS.

People expected iPhone 4G, OS 4.0.......and instead got iPad......no thanks.

This whole announcement is rather satirical. It almost looks like a youtube spoof, Steve Jobs dressed overly middle class in Walmart levi's up to his naval, his running sneakers, and turtle neck faded shirt. He proceeds to introduce this product "it is phenomenal it is unbelievably great it is way better then a laptop is an incredible experience is phenomenal for mail". A good product sell itself. When you reintroduce some piece of garbage..."but ohh the price.."..$499 is double the price of many great netbooks..and only 16 Gb!!!?? If you wanted to get this product and use it functionally, you would need at least one of the $600+ versions..and how generous of the not to tie me down on a 3G network, apple is such a consumer friendly company..

For those that say "I need this", or even "I could use this", is rather ridiculous. Laptop touch pad were optimized for the smallest range of motion and largest response. Keyboards were designed for the natural alignment of your hands. Lets all inconvenience ourselves so middle class Steve Job's can afford some better clothes.

That's hilarious. I think it's gonna sell just because it's from Apple. But the only use I see with this is PORTABLE HIGH DEFF PORN.

=D

For some reasons its looks like another e-reader with a fancy badge to me.

BlindObject saID.....
But the only use I see with this is PORTABLE HIGH DEFF PORN.

Yes and a mobile porn viewer as well :D

At first glance, I was thrilled with the color. The other readers I've seen are all monochrome. But without a USB port how can you get your personal PDF files from your desktop onto the device? I don't know if the Kindle or Sony readers have this capability either. I was holding off buying a reader until a color one came out, but if you cannot put your own files onto the unit, what's the point? It seems like they only want you to buy content from publishers. That thing would end up being a money pit for sure.
