Apple reopens all its China stores as new virus infections fall to single figures

Why it matters: While the coronavirus outbreak continues to spread across the rest of the world, epicenter China appears to have COVID-19 under control. The number of new infections has fallen to single digits, and in response to the improving situation, Apple has reopened all 42 of its branded retail stores.

At its height on February 13, China added 15,000 new coronavirus cases in one day. Yesterday, the country recorded the first single-digit rise—eight—in new infections since it started recording numbers in mid-January.

There was more reason to be optimistic today, with Wuhan city, the source of the outbreak, reporting just five new cases, down from eight the previous day, and no locally transmitted infections reported in the rest of the country.

While other countries impose measures to try and control the spread of the virus, China’s National Health Commission said the epidemic had passed its peak, helped by the world’s biggest mass quarantine implemented in the Hubei province. But the country could still see an uptick in infections as people return to work and there are new imported cases.

Apple closed all of its China stores in early February over coronavirus concerns, but they have been gradually reopening over the last few weeks. There are now 38 of the 42 outlets open again for business, with the final four opening today. The closures were one of the reasons Apple warned last month that it did not expect to meet its own revenue guidance for the second quarter. The temporary closure of its suppliers’ factories also affected the company’s bottom line.

While Apple stores have reopened in China, all 17 of its outlets in Italy have been closed as the country gets put on lockdown.

In related news, Apple has now said it’s okay to disinfect its products, and Pornhub is giving away free premium subscriptions to Italian users stuck at home because of the virus.

China is safer than elsewhere the same as solitary confinement is safer. Enclosed by walls with soldier guards whipping people back inside to die alone. Yep. Looks safe enough to put snipers on every building when the masked emperor visits to show support.

Wuhan underestimated the virus as in the government and the health authorities.

China IS SAFER RIGHT NOW. They have all the necessary measures in place to identify and contain COVID-19. Just because you hate commies doesn't mean you need to deny any helpful safety measures they developed to stop the spread of the virus. Admittedly, China cause a terrible, terrible blunder in the early days of containment. But they have also done things right to stem the tide of infections later on. And their health and safety measures should an example for others to follow.

You will see the wisdom of my words in a couple days or weeks to come.

I'm not even sure you understand what you're saying at this point. China took the same measures it used on the Uighurs and on Tibet and applied them to its educated and tech citizens. Hitler did the same thing to disarm the German citizenry. Stalin did the same.

You're stating nonsense about the Wuhan government and health authorities as if they said nothing to the central politburo and emperor Xi beforehand. Apparently you believe that local governments don't need permission from the Politburo to take action, let alone actions that involved shuttering 23 million people in. I try not to point and say government shill but wow. I guess revisionism really works when no one is left to point up the lies. (oh right Stalin..I should have remembered).

As for whether it works, well there's an article somewhere in my postings about carving the lungs out of political prisoners there and using them to save lives. Probably western propaganda to you.
