Apple's M1-powered iPad Pro handles burns, scratches, and bending quite well

In context: Apple's 12.9-inch iPad Pro is being hailed as the best tablet the company has ever made, with its M1 chip and Liquid Retina XDR display packing mini-LED tech. But has that made it less durable? Tests discovered that despite the upgrades, the latest and largest iPad Pro is tougher than its predecessors, though you should still be careful not to bend it.

Zack Nelson of JerryRigEverything carried out his usual physical stress tests on the 12.9-inch M1 iPad Pro 2021 that Apple recently unveiled. He starts with a scratch test that reveals the screen starts showing marks at level 6, followed by deeper grooves at level seven—similar to what you would see with most phones.

One might expect that holding a flame to the iPad Pro's display would be a recipe for disaster, but while the areas do turn black after about 17 seconds, they recover quickly, and the iPad works as normal.

Finally, there's the bend test. The latest iPad is half a millimeter thicker this year, helping prevent it from snapping in half in the same way as its predecessors did during the same experiment. The tablet does retain this bent angle, though it still functions normally. You can even bend it back closer to its usual shape without destroying the device—it's just a lot more wrinkly.

Nelson praises Apple for improving the durability of the latest iPad Pro. Knowing it's not that easy to break or damage one is reassuring for a device priced at $1,099 (Wi-Fi only) and $1,299 (cellular). Still, try not to sit on it.

This is the most brainless YT channel concerning technology.

To destroy amazing piece of tech just for the sake of destroying it - how many (kilo)tones of e-waste they created in just past 5 years. Who the hell use the devices like so. I remember e.g. 2018 iPP propaganda. How easy it is to bend. For 3 years I haven't recorded single scratch or deformation and I'm using it like 10-12h/day wherever I go.

We are bombarded with calls to reuse old, recycle, conserve resources and on the other end people getting paid on YT doing exact opposite and wastefulness be damned. However improbable is brain transplant, time to Rig some Brain.

I'm cool, ...just had to get this out.

Well, let me try...

Apple continue to dominate consumer electronics. Its getting savage how far ahead they are now. What are you going to buy instead of an ipad M1? A Surface go? A chrome tablet? Dont make me laugh!

Why laughing is fun. You could do a MS commercial and compare a slow surface pro with a vastly inferior screen, ram, speakers. To an iPad Pro. But It’s cheaper, has a kick stand and I love that click. Oh wait, sorry it’s been done

An actual computer you can do work on and repair, because you're not a lickspittle ego-welded to a soulless trillion-dollar megacorporation.

The only useful service Apple provides is that it's essentially a societal grease trap for the stupid and the insufferable.

I can’t use a surface tablet to work on. It doesn’t edit video. In fact if I need a windows laptop to match an iPad Pro in video editing then I need a heavy thing that makes a lot of noise and needs to be plugged into the wall.

However, if I’m doing office work sure the surface go works. But then half the board at my company have replaced their windows machines with iPads. Get with the times mate, Windows is boomer tech.

I said, an actual computer.

Microsoft's shitty also-ran was never on the table.
They aren’t better though. They are much heavier and larger, typically slower, even a Ryzen 5900X mobile gets smoked by the M1 in productivity (look up comparisons on YouTube). Laptops can’t be propped up on a plane or used in a hammock or as easily in bed. They need mains power and throttle themselves when not plugged in, their batteries give out about 4 times quicker than an iPads battery does.

It’s all use case. I use my iPad to take on holiday and edit scuba diving videos along with watching movies, email, FaceTime etc. When you tell me that “an actual computer” is better for me you are quite badly incorrect.

Your benchmarks don't account for and can't measure the lack of user-serviceable parts, the atrociously shitty design and layout of Apple products inside of the case, or the millions of compromises and rights you've basically given away to Apple by buying and using their product and the control they now have over you and your livelihood, all of which only seems superfluous until you need it.
