What's the latest thinking on self awareness in computers
The way I see it we have the hardware its just a question of getting it started.

AI is a decision tree process (ie a known problem with known choices), OR a learning system that adds successes as it goes. "Self Awareness" - - being cogent - - is at best things like POST (power on self test), ECC (error correction codes like our cars have), or devices with onboard diags (like HDs S.M.A.R.T).

HAL (2001 movie) said something like "dave, don't pull out my memory" - - not in the real world realm of possibilities today.
