go for that, that is quite a good deal, you will still need to put a good graphics card and some more ram for a mean machine, but should run ok.

That is true Tedster....Back when the Athlon Xp's were being closed out the 2500+ could be had for as little as $50 for a retail cpu....

Many people where buying them up, slapping them in a Abit NF7-S oc'ing them to a 3200+ and selling systems on ebay for a lot more than they where worth, all in the while people didnt realise they where getting a OC'ed 2500+

In the NF7-S bios, it gave you a direct choice to boot the 2500 as is or run it as a 3200+ with no tweaking of the bios what so ever. Just select, save, restart and you had an instant 3200+ (even posted that way, not like some boards that would just say somthing like "Athlon XP 2.1ghz" when you OC'ed) Buyers couldnt tell unless they tinkered around with the bios a bit....But not many people buying prebuilts do that.

The thermal output was only about 2C hotter when you OC'ed the 2500 to a 3200 so that wasnt an issue either.
yeah, but AMD wised up later on and locked down the multipliers on later versions of the chip. I burned up my first CPU and RAM by OC'ing. I will never OC again.

Tedster, you might think it runs fast but have you tried using the card with an X2 or even a single-core Athlon 64? I can bet you that you'll see much better performance. For a GPU as fast as the 7800GS, you need an equally capable CPU to keep up, which I doubt the Athlon XP can do. So getting an X800GTO or a 6800GT or even a 7600GT will help utilize the full potential of that particular card with an Athlon XP. However, if he has a monitor that supports ultra-high resolutions like 1600x1200 and the Athlon XP is OCable, he might be able to remove most of the bottleneck. It really depends on him.
the point is he has an Athlon XP system - socket A. If he's going to replace the motherboard and everything else, he will have a new system. I merely recommended a good graphics card for his motherboard. an X2 will not run on his motherboard - that is a socket 939 processor.
Don't confuse Athlon XP with Athlon64 or Athlon X2! ;)

Am2

itd be sweet if it is a socket 939, cause 754 dosent allow dual channel

just figured that one out recently :p

Its going to be socket AM2.....939 and 754 do no support DDR2 as he mentioned in the post.

I am almost certain that PC is going to be a lower end Compaq from Wal-Mart or other retailer....Be certain that it has a PCIE slot before you buy it because some cheaper systems lack it. (Reason they are $3-500 with an LCD monitor) If it does not, your going to be stuck with a standard PCI solution for a video card....And That sucks
