First, thank you in advance for any guidance or support you can offer in helping me to get my computer running properly again. For the last five days, I have been having a problem in that when I do a search (usually through Yahoo) for something, it brings up a normal list of items. However, when I click on the link that I want to go to, it redirects me through one or two pages before ending up on a page that says Scour. This final page has links that I can click, although I never have.

Per your suggestions, I have completed the steps and am attaching the logs below. The GMER is really long, so I will be adding it in subsequent posts.

Good job! And welcome to TechSpot! It is always appreciated when I see a member has read and followed the directions in the steps. Thank you for that.

Let's look a bit further for the culprit:
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESETOnlineScan
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
[o] Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    [o] Double click on the
    esetSmartInstallDesktopIcon.png
    on your desktop.
  • Check 'Yes I accept terms of use.'
  • Click Start button
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
    esetonlinescannersettings_thumb.jpg
  • Uncheck 'Remove found threats'
  • Check 'Scan archives/
  • Leave remaining settings as is.
  • Press the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please wait for the scan to finish.
  • When the scan completes, press List of found threats
  • Push Export of text file and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Paste this log in your next reply.
  • Push the Back button
  • Push Finish

NOTE: If no malware is found then no log will be produced. Let me know if this is the case.
======================================
Please note: If you have Combofix on the desktop already, please uninstall it. Then download the current version and do the scan: Uninstall directions, if needed
  • Click START> then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
--------------------------------------
Download Combofix from HERE or HEREhttp://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe and save to the desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. It is recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode if needed.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
    whatnext.png
  • .Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware
  • .If Combofix asks you to update the program, allow
  • .Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • .Close any open browsers.
  • .Double click combofix.exe
    cf-icon.jpg
& follow the prompts to run.
  • When the scan completes , a report will be generated-it will open a text window. Please paste the C:\ComboFix.txt in next reply..
Re-enable your Antivirus software.

Note 1:Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Note 2: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
Note 3: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
Note 4: CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Note 5: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion", restart computer to fix the issue.

Please paste both logs into your next reply.

I didn't notice any Java on the system. Have you remove it for any reason? If not, I'll have to get it back as you will need it for some web pages.
=========================================
My Guidelines: please read and follow:
  • Be patient. Malware cleaning takes time and I am also working with other members while I am helping you.
  • Read my instructions carefully. If you don't understand or have a problem, ask me.
  • If you have questions, or if a program doesn't work, stop and tell me about it. Don't try to get around it yourself.
  • Follow the order of the tasks I give you. Order is crucial in cleaning process.
  • File sharing programs should be uninstalled or disabled during the cleaning process..
  • Observe these:
[o] Don't use any other cleaning programs or scans while I'm helping you.
[o] Don't use a Registry cleaner or make any changes in the Registry.
[o] Don't download and install new programs- except those I give you.
  • Please let me know if there is any change in the system.
If I have not replied for 2 days, you can send me a PM reminder. Include the URL of your thread. Please do not send me a PM to tell me your logs are up.
If I don't get a reply from you in 5 days, the thread will be closed. If your problem persist, you can send a PM to reopen it.

Yes, I uninstalled Java as there were so many updates. Also, before I found this site one of the scans showed a virus in one of the JAva fields. Once I saw on this site that older Adobe and Java updates were vulneabilities, i just uninstalled it thinking i could reinstall later.

I will do the ESET and ComboFix now and then report back. Do you still need the initial GMER log?

Thank you

ok, here is the log for eset:

C:\Documents and Settings\Brian\Local Settings\Temp\jar_cache4893582066900134238.tmp multiple threats
C:\Documents and Settings\Brian\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\2T6F1713\voc[1].png probably a variant of JS/TrojanDownloader.Agent.FHXTQSO trojan
C:\Documents and Settings\Debbie\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\31\781da39f-30edef21 Java/TrojanDownloader.Agent.NBU trojan
C:\Documents and Settings\Debbie\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\4\520ed144-169f79ba Java/Agent.CO trojan

C:\Documents and Settings\Debbie\Local Settings\Temp\jar_cache9039046329925996456.tmp multiple threats

As mentioned previously, these are the same (or at least similar) Java-trojans I found before. When I saw that older Java versions were a possible threat, i uninstalled all Java programs, figuring i could reinstall once I got everything cleaned up.

I have tried to run ComboFix a couple of times. Each time it stalls out or goes to a blue screen. The first blue screen said "IRQL not less or equal." I then restarted and the computer had several pop-ups from Windows saying it had receovered from serious errors. The second blue screen said "driver_corrupted_mmpool."

I will await further instructions. After this evening, i will not be on this computer for a couple of days but will check back after that. Thank you again!

I a, seeing so many infected files in the Java cache lately! Having the old versions of Java still on the system even if you have the current update, each make a vulnerability for the system.

To remove the malware in the Java cache:
To clear the Java Plug-in cache:

  • [1]. Click Start > Control Panel.
[2]. Double-click the Java icon in the control panel.
    java.png
    The Java Control Panel appears.
    plugin_cache1.jpg

[3].Click Settings under Temporary Internet Files. The Temporary Files Settings dialog box appears.
    plugin_cache2.jpg

[4] Click Delete Files. The Delete Temporary Files dialog box appears.
    plugin_cache3.jpg

[5]. Click OK on Delete Temporary Files window.
Note: This deletes all the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the cache.
[6]. Click Apply> OK on Temporary Files Settings window.

==================================
For the Combofix problem: Be sure to read the note about not moving the mouse while Combofix is running. This will cause a stall.

If, for some reason, Combofix refuses to run, try one of the following:
1. Run Combofix from Safe Mode.
2. Delete Combofix file, download fresh one, but rename combofix.exe to
brian.exe BEFORE saving it to your desktop.
Do NOT run it yet.
3. Please download and run Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
  • Rkill.com
  • Rkill.scr
  • Rkill.pif
  • Rkill.exe
  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run the following>>>>.

Please download exeHelper by Raktor and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click on exeHelper.com or exeHelper.scr to run the fix tool.
  • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  • A log file called exehelperlog.txt will be created and should open at the end of the scan)
  • A copy of that log will also be saved in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com
  • Copy and paste the contents of exehelperlog.txt in your next reply.

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the tool again before posting a log and then post the two logs together (they both will be in the one file).

Rkill instructions
*************************************
Once you've gotten one of them to run, immediately run brian.exe by double clicking on it. If normal mode still doesn't work, run BOTH tools from safe mode.

In case #2, please post BOTH logs, rKill and Combofix.

Below are the Rkill, exehelpher and combofix logs. Thank you again for your assistance.

Looking good! By the way, I checked on 'Scour.' It described itself as a 'social search'- whatever that means! Have the redirects stopped?
=============================================
Please run this Custom CFScript:

  • [1]. Close any open browsers.
[2]. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
[3]. Open notepad> click on Format> Uncheck 'Word Wrap'> and copy/paste the text in the code below into it:Be sure to scroll down to include ALL lines.
Code:
File::
c:\program files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\UserFaultCheck]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring]
"DisableMonitoring"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"CTHelper"=-
Driver::
Viewpoint Manager Service
Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe
CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it will produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt . Please paste in your next reply.
====================
You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Media Player:

To remove Viewpoint Media Player

Boot into Safe Mode
  • Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard.
  • Select the Safe Mode option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
  • Click on Start > Run> type: services.msc> Enter
  • Click the Extended tab.
  • Scroll down to Viewpoint Manager Service
  • Double-click to open> Properties> General tab.
  • Click the Stop button.
  • Change the Startup Type to Disabled.
  • Click> Apply> OK. Exit Services.
  • Click on Start > Settings > Control Panel >Add/Remove Programs
  • Highlight and remove all references to Viewpoint - i.e. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player.

Use Windows Explorer> Right click on Start> Explore> My Computer> Double click on Local Drive (C)> Programs> Do a right click> Delete on each of the following
C:\Program Files\ViewManager\ <-- and delete this folder
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\ <-- and delete this folder

Empty the Recycle Bin
=======================================
Then the last scan: Download HijackThis http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HijackThis.zipand save to your desktop.
  • Extract it to a directory on your hard drive called c:\HijackThis.
  • Then navigate to that directory and double-click on the hijackthis.exe file.
  • When started click on the Scan button and then the Save Log button to create a log of your information.
  • The log file and then the log will open in notepad. Be sure to click on Format> Uncheck Word Wrap when you open Notepad
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and paste (Ctrl+V) the log in your next reply.

NOTE: Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I will not be near that computer until after 6PM (eastern time) but will do as directed at that time. Since you have been helping me, I have not been using that computer for fear of doing something that might make things worse.

Would you prefer I check for current redirect issues before starting the latest series of tests or just wait until I am finished?

Once again, thank you for your time and efforts.

No problem- I'll catch up with my 'day people.' You're welcome for the help and we're almost through.

The one thing you should do first is run the script. The security center is being disabled and the script will fix that. Once that's fixed, okay to use the system. I'm not sure what 'test' you mean. Removing Viewpoint and running HJT can wait if needed.

I think I used the wrong terminology. By "latest series of tests" I meant the custom script, removing viewpoint and HJT.

When I get to the computer later, I will run the above checks, post the logs. After that post is up, I will begin using the computer again to see if I am seeing the redirection.

Below are the logs from the latest ComboFix and HJT. A couple of comments though...

First, during the ComboFix scan, it asked to update the program and then reboot during the middle of the scan. I hope this didn't negatively affect anything.

Second, There was no Viewpoint in services. I did find a program to delete (under add/delete programs). There were also no Viewpoint entries under C:\program files.

Thank you!

I used yahoo search for two different things. Both times, it worked properly...meaning no redirects.

As mentioned in previous post, let me know what I should do next. Thank you!

Ah yes- if you had said 'scans' I would have understood! 'Test' was something mysterious!

We got Viewpoint with the script- not to worry! Did you have Symantec/Norton for security at one time? Looks like it was all removed except for 2 Active X entries:

Open Internet Explorer> Tools> Manage Addons>> there are 2 sections for the dialog box 1. addons currently on the system and 2. addons previously on the system> Look in both sections: There are the entries I see:
DPF: {644E432F-49D3-41A1-8DD5-E099162EEEC5} - hxxp://security.symantec.com/sscv6/SharedContent/common/bin/cabsa.cab>> this is for the free security check.
DPF: {6A344D34-5231-452A-8A57-D064AC9B7862} - hxxps://webdl.symantec.com/activex/symdlmgr.cab>> this was download manager.
I'm not sure how they are listed but each should show some part of the entry above. That should handle them and then you don't have to run HJT again.
==============================================
A note for you: You have a lot of unnecessary processes running- these are usually started on boot. The media programs like Creative and all it's 'friends, media players, burning software, printers/scanners/cameras- can each be started as needed. As our systems get older, they gather files and folders that slow the system down. So stopping unnecessary startups should give you some extra 'surfing speed.'
=============================================
Your system is clean! You can removing all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created
  • Uninstall ComboFix and all Backups of the files it deleted
  • Click START> then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
    CF_Uninstall-1.jpg
  • Download OTCleanIt by OldTimer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.
-----
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Note: If any tool, file or folder (belonging to the program we have used) hasn't been deleted, please delete it manually.
------------------------------------------
  • You should now set a new Restore Point and remove the old restore points to prevent infection from any previous Restore Points.
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools
  • Click "System Restore".
  • Choose "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next".
  • Give the Restore Point a name> click "Create".
  • Go back and follow the path to > System Tools.
    [*]Choose Disc Cleanup
[*]Click "OK" to select the partition or drive you want.
    [*]Click the "More Options" Tab.
[*]Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous Restore Points except the newly created one.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Let me know if you have any questions.

Bobbye,
Thanks for all of your help.

Yes, I did have Norton's and it worked great at first but it was taking so long to load up that I uninstalled it and started with the freewares from Cnet. Just so I understand, am i to delete those two addon entries?

I'll report back if any problems pop-up. Otherwise, thank you very much for your time and patience.

Regards,
Brian

When you find the entries in addons, highlight each, then click on Disable. That should handle them. I didn't see any other Norton 'left overs'!

You're very welcome for the help. I'm leaving some tips to help you stay clean:

Tips for added security and safer browsing: (Links are in Bold Blue)
  1. Browser Security
[o] Safe Settings (Please ignore the suggestion to use the Registry Editior in this section "Creating a Custom Security Zone")
[o] ZonedOut. This manages the Zones in Internet Explorer. (For IE7 and IE8, Windows 2000 thru Vista. No Windows 7)
    [o] Replace the Host Files
[o] Google Toolbar Pop Up Blocker
[o]Web of Trust (WOT) Site Advisor. Traffic-light rating symbols show which rate the site for Trustworthiness, Vendor Reliability, Privacy, Child Safety.
  2. Have layered Security:
[o]Antivirus :(only one):Both of the following programs are free and known to be good:
    [o]Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus
    [o] [o]Avast-Free Antivirus
[o]Firewall (only one): Use bi-directional firewall. Both of the following programs are free and known to be good:
    [o]Comodo
    [o]Zone Alarm
  3. Antimalware: I recommend all of the following:
[o]Spywareblaster: SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX.
    [o]Spybot Search & Destroy
  4. Updates: Stay current:
[o] the Microsoft Download Sitefrequently. All updates marked Critical and the current SP updates.
[o]Adobe Reader Install current, uninstall old.
[o]Java Updates Install current, uninstall old.
  5. Tracking Cookies
    Reset Cookie:
[o]For Internet Explorer: Internet Options (through Tools or Control Panel) Privacy tab> Advanced button> check 'override automatic Cookie handling'> check 'accept first party Cookies'> check 'Block third party Cookies'> check 'allow per session Cookies'> Apply> OK.
[o]For Firefox: Tools> Options> Privacy> Cookies> check ‘accept Cookies from Sites’> Uncheck 'accept third party Cookies'> Set Keep until 'they expire'. This will allow you to keep Cookies for registered sites and prevent or remove others. (Note: for Firefox v3.5, after Privacy click on 'use custom settings for History.')
I suggest using the following two add-on for Firefox. They will prevent the Tracking Cookies that come from ads and banners and other sources:
    AdBlock Plus
    Easy List
[o]For Chrome: Tools> Options> Under The Hood> Privacy Section> CHECK 'Restrict how third party Cookies can be used'> Close.
  6. Do regular Maintenance
    [o] Temporary File Cleaner
  7. Restore Points:
    [o]See System Restore Guide
  8. Safe Email Handling
[o] Don't open email from anyone you don't know.
[o] Don't open Attachments in the email. Safe to your desktop and scan for viruses using a right click
[o] Don't leave your personal email address on the internet. Have a separate email account at one of the free web-based emails like Yahoo.
Please let me know if you find any bad link.
