Browsers cannot display webpages

Hey,

I can't view webpages on either firefox or ie7, its a friends computer so I'm not sure whats changed in the last while. Its a wired ethernet connection and I can ping websites and telnet to them so the connection seems good. Other computers on the network work ok.

When I go into safe mode with networking its the same story BUT if I do "netsh winsock reset catalog" and reboot to safe mode again then the browsers work. But as soon as I go back to normal mode the browsers stop working. And going back into safe mode again I have to reset winsock before it'll work in safe mode. So it seems like something in normal mode is messing with winsock. I could be wrong though, I'm no expert !

I've gone through the 8 recommended steps as best I can except I couldn't do updates. The log files are attatched. Any help would be really appreciated.

It sounds like DNS issues but let's see if LSP-Fix can get you back up.

Download SDFix to Desktop.

On Desktop run SDdFix It will run (install) then close.

Then reboot into Safe Mode

As the computer starts up, tap the F8 key several times.

On the Boot menu Choose Safe Mode.

Click thu all the prompts to get to desktop.

At Desktop
My Computer C: drive. Double-click to open.

Look for a folder called SD Fix. Double-click to enter SD Fix.

Double-click to RunThis.bat. Type Y to begin.

SD Fix does its job.

When prompted hit the enter key to restart the computer

Your computer will reboot.

On normal restart the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then say Finished,
Hit the Enter key to end the script and load your desktop icons.

Once the desktop is up, the SDFix report will open on screen and also be saved to the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
Attach the Report.txt file to your next post.

When finished, it will open a log.

To check DNS I did:

I forgot to mention that I had tried LSP-Fix and it found no problems, however for reference here are the items it listed in the Keep section:

As for SDFix and ComboFix, I've attached the logs below. By the way it wouldn't install Recovery Console because it had no internet connection.

It is a coverall and you may see a few errors related to it addressing something you do not need. This is normal ignore.

Update then run SuperAntiSpyware

Then Click Preferences
then click Repairs

Then counting down from top do the following entries

Numbers 6, 8, 11, 12, 13, 15,18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25, 26 and 27!

Reboot attach a new HJT log and get me a Status report on the computer and the issues you posted!

I'm having trouble removing WinSvchostManager with hijackthis...I did a scan, ticked the item then clicked "fix checked" and then i click yes to delete or repair but nothing happens apart from the list of items disappearing. I tried rebooting and it still appears.

I tried in safe mode, safe mode with networking and also normal mode but it doesn't delete. Any tips for me ? Thanks

I edited the Copy/paste operation in post #6 to try and handle the WinSvchostManager.

So go back and run it again as it is now the only remaining problem and your Internet problem.

Ok I'm just after having a few scary moments! The laptop powered off when that code was being executed and wouldn't turn back on even though the power was connected to the laptop. Eventually I realised the other end of the power supply wasn't connected to the wall, doh ! Then it wouldn't boot in safe mode and the C drive had to be checked for consistency.

Anyway I finally got to safe mode again and ran that code, then the SuperAntiSpyware repairs. So did it work ? Hell yeah ! Man I was pure delighted to see webpages load in normal mode again. Absolutely thrilled, and its not even my computer !

I really wanna say a big thanks to you for the help, it really is appreciated I've attached the final hijackthis log below.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by did I use 74.125.67.100 . Do you mean with the nslookup command or did I try that address in the browser ? I tried google.com with the nslookup and also tried direct IP addresses in the browser but they didn't work.

And yeah, mflynn, really knows his/her stuff. (sorry don't know, male or female ?)

And also normal to want run a chkdsk and boot to Safe Mode on an abnormal shutdown. Since the normal Shutdown was not completed.

So consider the below...

Save to desktop.

This will remove all the tools we used to clean your computer.


Double-click OTCleanIt.exe. Click CleanUp. Yes to the "Begin cleanup Process?"

Approve all if prompted by Firewall. Approve Widows Defender or other guards or security programs while OTCleanIt attempting access to the Internet to allow all.

If prompted to Reboot click, Yes.
OTCleanit will delete itself when finished, If not delete it by yourself.

The issues can and are likely found is in System Restore so do the below

Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk- System Restore and create a new Restore point. Name it "After cleanup at TechSpot".

Then Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Cleanup
Click OK to accept C:
Select all Boxes
Then click More Options
Here click System Restore and OK to "Are you sure" and the OK to Run.

As this runs it clears all but the most recent Restore Point but it does one other thing that can contain infested files and a huge amount of disk space.

It clears what is known as Shadow copies which are used by specialized back up programs.

This is if you have the Volume Shadow Copy running which is the default.

Every two weeks or so, run MBAM and SAS until clean.

They take a while, so leave scanning while you are sleeping working or watching TV. If not done under the gun they can be scheduled not to interfere with computer time.

If they find something they can not clean, then get back to us.

I have been using ThreatFire for more than a year, it just went from ver 3 to ver 4.

It was designed to be used with and to co-exist with other Virus scanners.
