California tests smart freeway that could make drivers wait four minutes to merge

So long as it is CA that is the test subject rather than where I live, go for it. But they ought to have an expiration date, so if it fails, they remove it. In fact, all legislation ought to have clearly stated goals, & expiration dates just in case they fail to meet those goals.

You couldn't possibly be more wrong. Blue states like NY and California are the only states in the country losing population, as millions flee these hell-holes for high-growth states like TX and FL.
Maybe reading comprehension isn't ur strong suit, nothing you said refutes what you're replying to

What about Floriduh, or red states don't show up on your negative radar??

Tampa, Orlando, Ft Lauderdale and Miami AND all the highways leading to them will put CA to shame!!
Even the small town where I live. The republican city council is in bed with developers for years now and it has been so built up till it's almost Lauderdale on Gulf!! Feh.
That is because everyone from Blue states is moving there, and to Texas. 🤷‍♂️

See what I did there?

The obvious solution to freeways being overly congested is to simply make them less necessary, but that would require public transportation to not suck or, baring that, for people to stagger their departure times and not all get on the road at once.

But, y'know, that would be "inconvenient" and the only thing worse than a bad driver is a roadblock.

Transportation Agency: "Look how much better freeway traffic got."
Drivers: "Look how much worst surface street traffic got."

Drivers might be able to make up for a 5 minute meter wait time on a 30+ minute freeway trip, but a lot of cars will find it faster to make shorter trips on surface streets. This experiment looks like bad science: "We got great results by measuring the wrong thing."
This is a good point.

The only counterpoint I can think of is Google, Apple, and the rest of the GPS apps out there already seem to prioritize "the shortest path", with only mild consideration given to things like traveling speeds, stop/start, turns, etc. They all love to route drivers through neighborhoods and surface streets, and away from the main routes, all to shave 30 seconds off the trip (on paper, if you hit every green light, roll through stop signs, drive through residential neighborhoods at 40mph, etc).

Hopefully it doesn't make it worse, but it certainly isn't a new phenomenon.

Hilarious!! It's not the inept republicans and the non-existing infrastructure, it's the people moving there!!

By your own flawed logic, the same could be said about the state that's a bigly thorn in MAGA's hide: California!! Everyone is moving there!!

Reality isn't that difficult to accept. Millions of Californians are fleeing the state; it is losing population for the first time in history. Meanwhile Red States like South Carolina, Idaho, Texas, and Florida are the fastest growing states in the union.

The only people moving to California are Illegals.

GL with that, oh wait....
