Cannot connect to internet, what should I do?

i just got my broadband line yesterday...got evrythng done....but still i cannot connect to internet...and also whn i open my browser the whole computer freezes(its a pretty old pc)..i checked my network device status and shows working....ipconfig(advised) shows an ip address....i really dont know what to do now....the ip guy says there is a prob in my operating sys(xp) and/or in my lan card.....
please please help...thanks in advance...:)
 
We need full system spec's before we can proceed.

Can you click start > run > and type cmd and in the prompt type the following:

ipconfig /all

then type:

ping www.techspot.com

Copy and paste the results of these commands into notepad, and save it, then upload it here or paste the contents using the computer your on now.

The above two commands will detail your entire IP configuration, and also test your connection to this site, so we can see if the issue is network related, or browser related.

If your not already, I would recommend you use the computer your on now to download Firefox from www.mozilla.com and then install that on your troublesome computer. Maybe FF will work for you and at least get you online so you can further resolve your issues.
