Can't boot up Windows "ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupt"

if you windows report

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.

Please re-install a copy of the above file

There is a very simple way of handling this with out formatting without re installing windows all you will need is a working windows xp CD with you

1.start up your computer/ laptop and run bios setup

2. in the bios setup change boot sequence and make CDROM as first priority

3.save changes and restart the computer with your xp CD in the drive

4 boot from the CD and select repair console
in the comand window select your operating system and enteradmin password if any

5. Type EXPAND E:\1386\NTOSKRNL.EX_ C:WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
If you get a prompt asking you if you want to Overwrite the File.
You should enter Y for yes, then press <ENTER> to Overwrite.
then finally type EXIT

AND ITS ALL DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NB: Replace the letter E: in 5 with your CD-ROM Drive letter

This error is quite old if I remember right. Errors like missing files are more commonly caused by hardware failures and malware attacks, and to attempt to replace missing files only, is not recommended
