CCleaner has stopped working

Thank you but unless somebody in here has had good results with one or any of them, I won't try them. :)

It's working fine on mine, but trying out some av progs did mess with it a while back. Now if only Cc enhancer would download I'd be happy.

CCleaner has now stopped working on my machine. The error message is different for me though. I'm getting the message stating CCleaner will not work with this version of Windows.

CCleanerCannotRun.png

I just updated to the Windows 10 build 1607 from a restored backup system image. I'm now getting that error on trying to run CCleaner v5.16 or trying to install CCleaner v5.25. Compatibility mode doesn't work, neither does running as administrator. CCleaner was working fine before the update to 1607. And I was running CCleaner on 1607 in a previous Windows install. So far CCleaner is the only application that is not working correctly.

I don't want to clean install. But I will, before playing with this BS for very long.

I wish you the best, I'm trying to find someone with W10 on a DVD/CD so I canreinstall it. I can't afford $199.00 for it

I'll cross my fingers & hope I can do it correctly. If I do it correctly, will it replace W7 with W10? In other words, if I decide to reinstall OS down the road, will it put W10 there or W7?

Depends on the OS you are installing. Windows 7 disk will not install Windows 10. And Windows 10 disk will not install Windows 7.

Originally in was W7 then I did the free upgrade & had pc problems recently when it formatted the harddrive & went back to W7 which is what it is now.

Now you should do a clean install of Windows 10. Since you have already done the upgrade to Windows 10 you are eligible for activation with a clean install of Windows 10. Use the Windows Media Builder to create a DVD or USB stick of Windows 10 install media.

Caution though, now that I think about it. I think you are asking if you can fall back on Windows 7 by chance there are difficulties. With a clean install you will not have an installation of Windows 7 to go back to. This is where you would want to create a disk image with programs such as Acronis or Macrium Reflect, before you install Windows 10. This way if thing don't go right in Windows 10, you can restore the image of Windows 7.

In a round about way you answered my question. Long story hopefully short. TechSpot has ALWAYS preached about BACKING up whatever. I wish I listened because I LOST ALOT of stuff.
To sum it up, If I'm able to reinstall W10, I want it so if I do recovery, it WON'T go back to W7.
I downloaded Imgburn & am trying to find out how to burn the media tool to my CDRW to install W10, using this link http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/14183/beginner-geek-how-to-burn-an-iso-image-to-a-disc/

Surely you didn't embark on this saga because CCleaner freeware gave an error message? :) CCleaner updates come along so frequently that all you have to do is skip one or two. I've had that incompatibility message a few times in the past but waiting for an updated version solved it.

Just because it worked on yours, don't mean it'll work on others.

@cliffordcooley , I think I have created the cd you mentioned in post #61. If I understand correctly, I have to boot from the CD to install W10 correct?? And will that wipe out the W7 part? Just prefer to be safe & not sorry, thank you.

If you're using Western Digital HDDs, they give away a copy of Acronis imaging software. The catch is, it will only work with WD drives.

So, you image the Windows 7 drive, to a blank WD HDD. Then just put it away, along with the serial #, in case you need to activate it later, should that become necessary, (You want to return to windows 7).

Then just install Win 10 in the upgrade mode on the drive you're using now.

BTW, where did you come up with the copy of Windows 7 you're using now?. I of course don't really care, but it would have to be a legitimate copy, so that M$ would reactivate it at a later date.

If this is a large drive, you can partition it for just the size necessary for Windows, during the install. That way, you won't waste a 1TB drive or such with just the copy of windows 7. In fact, if you rename the Windows partition, (Windows 7 will obviously call it C:/), you could then stuff the drive in the machine for storage on the still blank portion, and leave the renamed Windows partition out of the boot order sequence.

FWIW, every version of CCleaner I have run across, has worked with Windows 7. I don't particularly care for the live monitoring new versions, so I run an older version.

The W7 I'm using now is the original OS as I got it from a trusted friend whom bought it new back then. When MS offered the free update to W10 I went for it. Had pc problems a week or so ago & it reformatted the harddrive back to W7.

As long as you have the serial number the copy of Windows came with, and M$ will reactivate for you, you're golden. (y)

I haven't tried Windows 10, but I'm assuming the upgrade version activates of the same Windows SN# as the Win 7 you're upgrading from. As long as M$ hasn't put any time constraints on the rollback, and you don't try to us both OSes at once, it should be alright, when or if the rollback becomes necessary.

Ok, I will be trying such in a couple hours & will post back, thank you.:)
If you're going to do a clean install, you could just do the Windows 7 install to a blank drive to begin with.

Can you do a clean install of Win 10, without a copy of Win installed? Not sure about that, since M$ is calling it "a free upgrade". Once upon a time, there were two separate copies of Windows retail. One of the Full OS, and a different disc for the upgrade only. (The upgrade copy was, IIRC, about half the price of the full version).

If I'm understanding @cliffordcooley correctly here "Now you should do a clean install of Windows 10. Since you have already done the upgrade to Windows 10 you are eligible for activation with a clean install of Windows 10.
