Black Mirror, created by one-time gaming journalist Charlie Brooker, reached its peak of popularity back in December following the release of Bandersnatch, which added choose-your-own-adventure-style interactivity to a feature-length episode.

“Netflix invites you to experience three new stories from the award-winning series that changed how you see technology, the future, the world, each other, love, privacy, connection, sex, family, work, afterlife,” reads the text in the clip.

The fifth season will see actor Andrew Scott playing someone who appears to have been pushed over the edge by today’s obsessive smartphone culture.

Another story stars singer Miley Cyrus as a performer who has “undergone a transformation in order to rise to a higher level of fame,” seemingly encouraged by an Alexa-style AI-powered doll that will doubtlessly turn out to be evil.

Anthony Mackie, best known for playing Falcon in the Avengers movie franchise, appears in the third story. He’s joined by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who portrayed Black Manta in DC’s Aquaman, prompting Brooker to tell Entertainment Weekly that "It’s the Marvel-DC crossover no one saw coming."

Three stories are fewer than what we’ve seen in most previous seasons, but they may have longer run times. We’ll find out for certain when the latest episodes of Black Mirror hit Netflix on June 5.

Why are we posting this on Techspot now? Simply because it's revolving theme around technology? Why not post about Mr. Robot? or countless other shows?

Not defending the BM as a cinema product, but have you really seen it or thoroughly read reviews? I believe that the social meaning of the Black Mirror is much bigger than many other TV series. Of course it is a fantasy of its creators but it's also their prophecy or a warning.

It is not just "around technology". It reflects existing sceptical point of view on many technology types our world is actively developing, that will affect the future of ourselves and our kids, incl. social tech, biotech and computer engineering. It shows how a regular human would fail to live his life in fullness in a variety of technology rich worlds, especially when he wants to do it staying in touch with himself.

When the question is between your existence and your oblivion, what would be your answer? The Black Mirror just tries to ask it before it becomes irrelevant.

I think every year one of the dictionary publishers adds new words. Recently it was "smartphone". ((Although none of the spell checkers have caught up with it as one word yet).

Next year, dunno what might be added. But, "geekslpanation", could be a strong contender.
