Why is it when the computer shuts down unexpectedly it some times runs chkdsk at boot up and some times not. Could you turn chkdsk offf?

I have laptop running windows 7 it got accidentally unplugged 4 times as battery no longer holds it charge!! Some times it runs chkdsk at boot up and some times not.

What does chkdsk boot up do? Should I check windows event viewer to see if there is problem with my hard-drive or errors because of the chkdsk at boot up of unexpectedly shut down?

CHKDSK will run automatically at startup if the system was not shutdown properly - -
aka crashes.

NEVER interrupt it if it runs!!

The program is verifying the NTFS structure on your boot drive and can be used to correct errors. There are two option flags that can be used:
  • chkdsk c: /f which is the normal use by the system
  • chkdsk c: /f /r adds an inspection of all sectors
It is good practice to run chkdsk before running any defrag.
