Chromecast expected to support HBO Go, Pandora, Songza, Vimeo

Google introduced Chromecast last week as an easy-to-use solution to beam videos from your mobile device or computer directly to your television. The $35 price point proved to be a hit among consumers as it quickly sold out on Amazon, Best Buy and Google Play although some may have hurriedly overlooked the simple fact that the dongle currently only works with video from Google Play, Netflix, YouTube or a Chrome tab.

Other app developers that want their content to work with Chromecast will have to enable support for it and there’s little doubt we will see a lot of that in the coming weeks and months. Vimeo’s VP of mobile Nick Alt recently said his company is excited about the emerging opportunities bridging mobile to connected TV and looks forward to offering Chromecast support in their products.

Along those same lines, we are also hearing that Verizon and Redbox are planning to implement Chromecast support with their Instant service while Plex is also reportedly investigating support.

Several other apps are also undergoing Chromecast testing. GTV Hacker uncovered data within the device’s software that points to internal testing for HBO Go, Revision3 and Songza in addition to the current app lineup. We also know at this point that Pandora will be heading to the platform.

Unfortunately there’s no real way to know exactly when Chromecast will spread its wings and become a more versatile device. Either way, however, it’s off to a solid start. Now if Google can just get more units in stock…

Which they had them now you can order them on Amazon, just have to wait until they get more in.

I might be wrong, but I don't think you can beam videos from your mobile device to your TV. You use your mobile device to tell Chromecast to start streaming from Netflix via your home wifi.

I also heard it comes with 3 months of Netflix, which is worth $24. So if you don't have Netflix because you lack a Netflix device, or perhaps don't have the ability to plug it in, this is a great way to get hooked up with Netflix.

$35 is an unheard of price for a new technology, so any complaints people have aren't going to carry much weight.

Unfortunately the Netflix offer expired -- apparently they ran out of 'supplies' within the first day of orders. Not a good launch for Google, considering their past problems with new products

But I agree, it looks like a killer device. Maybe more versatile than my Roku, with the Chrome tab streaming.

I right code for tablets just that using mini HDMI to full HDMI cable to the HDTV was pain. Now to have it go Wireless to HDMI would be neat to see if I can use NAS video to HDTV without using MCE devices on WTV files. I have the Android Player that can play such files just to get them to work via wireless would be neat. Not all tablets can do this though either dual core or quad core with at lease 1GB of RAM.

So the Chrome Tab method of streaming allows you to stream video from non-supported sites (Dailymotion, etc.) right? No lag? Good audio? 1080p? If so, I'm totally getting one.

Got mine this week; I can say that it doesn't play videos from Chrome tabs very smoothly. Since the Pandora widget hasn't been incorporated yet, I've been using the site via tab, and that's fine, but non-youtube vids are a bit balky. If you're hoping to use streaming sites, you're out of luck, at least for now. (Maybe my cable internet is just weak or maybe the chromecast is.) Still, the YouTube and Netflix capabilities alone make my $35 well spent so far. I'm hoping that MLB At Bat gets added; that would be perfect for me.
