Baldur's Gate is getting an HBO TV series set after Baldur's Gate 3

Something to look forward to: Another video game franchise is getting the TV treatment. Baldur's Gate is being turned into an HBO television series, and it already sounds promising: the show, which continues where the third game left off, is being written by Craig Mazin, co-writer of The Last of Us and an avid D&D and BG3 fan.

Mazin, who also wrote the brilliant Chernobyl miniseries, will create, write, executive-produce, and showrun the Baldur's Gate 3 show, writes Deadline. Chris Perkins, the former Head of Story at Wizards of the Coast, will serve as consultant.

There are always concerns when a beloved gaming franchise gets a TV or movie adaptation, but Mazin certainly knows the subject matter. He says he's played nearly 1,000 hours of Baldur's Gate 3.

"I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it," says Mazin, who has been playing D&D weekly for the past 15 years.

Unlike The Last of Us, which mostly follows the story of the video games, HBO's Baldur's Gate will start where the third game ends. Deadline writes that it is designed to be ongoing and continue with different kinds of stories within the sprawling world of the game.

The show will feature both new and existing characters from Baldur's Gate 3. While the first two BioWare games are not "official source material," the series can use material from D&D's Forgotten Realms setting.

Keeping with the theme of the game, the show is expected to introduce underpowered characters who become stronger as they complete their journey.

Famous faces from BG3, both heroes and villains, will appear from time to time to meddle, "helping or hindering the new heroes." Mazin plans to ask voice cast members of Baldur's Gate 3 with ideas for them to participate in the TV adaptation – something we also saw in The Last of Us with Merle Dandridge reprising her role as Marlene.

HBO's Baldur's Gate is designed to coexist alongside The Forgotten Realms live-action Dungeons & Dragons series Hasbro Entertainment has set up at Netflix.

It's a golden age for video game-based live-action TV shows. In addition to the current TLOU and Fallout, there's God of War, Tomb Raider, Far Cry, Wolfenstein, Life is Strange, Mass Effect, and more, all of which are at different stages of production.

As a big fan of the Infinity Engine BGs, and one waiting for time to play BG3, I don't like this concept of obsessively making every franchise into a series to cash in. At present, there's a deluge. Perhaps they should put the money into making better films. But what do I care: I don't watch TV, except for old classics such as Voyager, Outer Limits, and (previously) Twin Peaks.

I'm all for video game TV shows, but no retcons, keep your politics out of it, stay true to the material. No DEInhires either.

Considering this is Hollywood, that's.impossible so I guess we can't have videogame TV shows.

That said, I do trust HBO over other people, but why Craig Mazin? I guess the GOY guys ended up screwing up that show when they ran out of Martins material.

GOT was a fun ride until the last season. I ended up having over 1o0 hours in a single play through on BG3 so I'm curious how long they could make the show.

Why do I suddenly want to read the dragonlance books again? I'm normally a sci-fi guy, not a high fantasy person

I have not had the time to install/play Baldur's Gate 3 yet and I'm unsure if that will happen any time soon.
As for the show...I'll just give it a chance and if I don't like it that will be the end.

GOT was a fun ride until the last season.

Absolutely and should I ever rewatch what used to be my favorite show I'll skip the awful last season.
I've been watching A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms show and I like it.
The tone is very different from GOT in a good way.
It feels much "lighter" to me so to say, yet still excites.

This is getting out of hand. Every beloved gaming IP does not need to become a TV or a movie, it's rarely done well anyways. It would appear that creative deficiencies and alive and well across the entire entertainment spectrum.

It should come as a surprise to absolutely no one that Hasbro really likes money. For BG3, they just happened to luck out by hiring one of the best game developers on the planet to develop the sequel before promptly announcing that Larian would never make another D&D game, so now we get to see everyone else take a swing at it to eek out a couple more bucks.

I can't predict with certainty that it will be garbage, but I can predict with certainty that it will include at least one big celebrity name who is currently between gigs, like a Chris Pratt as Mario situation. You think he was the right choice for Mario? Of course not, but he had the name and he wasn't busy.
