Computer crashing, application errors

First off, thanks for the assistance with this matter.

My computer works fine for awhile, but then it begins to 'white out' portions of internet explorer pages. If I close explorer and try to open it back up, it fails to do so, and then I begin to get application errors on things such as task manager, and the whole computer just grinds to a halt, forcing me to reset manually.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

Please keep in mind that we have just had the Thanksgiving holiday and weekend. But I will PM someone to see if they can check this.

Hi Mindshred

I quickly skimmed your thread.. Two comments to start. Try
1) Reset IE Settings
2) Also, run CrystalDiskInfo. Does it report your disk Health Status as Good?

After above, are your problems the same? Have you turned off one of the A/V's as Bobbye pointed out?

Thank you for the assistance! My apologies on the delay in getting back to this, I was unexpectedly out of town and away from the computer for a couple days.

I've removed Threatfire as Bobbye mentioned, and now I just have Avira. Though that didn't resolve the issue, if I only need Avira, that's still good to know.

I have just reset my IE settings as you've instructed, so I should know within a day or so whether that helped.

CrystalDiskInfo reports my Health Status as Caution, however!

Hi MindShred
CrystalDiskInfo reports my Health Status as Caution, however!
This means the SMART sensors on your disk have recorded some errors. On the one hand, this doesn't mean an imminent drive failure. But on the other hand, once SMART sensor errors start to occur it significantly increase the odds of a disk failure sometime in the future. So is probably wise to also plan to replace your hard disk.

That said, I saw this among the other errors in your old event log which often means backup failure due to disk and or memory errors (and why i asked you first check your drive)
Code:
Log: 'Application' Date/Time: 11/11/2010 9:11:30 AM
Type: error Category: 0
Event: 12289 Source: VSS
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error DeviceIoControl(00000248,0x0053c010,00039C30,0,00038C28,4096,[0]). hr = 0x80070057.

So first important question: Are you running backups? And have you verified your backups are completing successfully?

And while we want to review how your machine is doing in general since the changes you made, i think is best you still plan to replace your hard drive. which then also begs the question: is it better to transfer a snapshot of your current drive to the new one, or perhaps just do a full, clean reinstall.

Do you have your Windows and program installation CDs and any needed activiation product keys if need be?

Backups as in, Restore Points?

I checked the System Restore Wizard, and while I have it set to create restore points, it does not seem to be doing so. I toggled it off and back on, but I doubt that doing so did much good.

I've looked through my desk, and I don't see them. I've moved four or five times in the years since I bought the computer, so it's entirely likely that they were lost in one of the shuffles.

What's the make/model of your computer?

Are you XP Pro? or Home?

Is your computer from a system vendor from HP or Dell? Look under Start->Programs. Any chance there's a recovery manager already installed (as sometimes they let you create your own recovery CDs)

btw.. how's the machine been running since your last set of changes?>

/* edit */
re: backups

at a minimum you should be backing your personal files and folders. (System restore only save system state. It doesn't provide for a reinstall. Nor is it guarnteed to recover system state when you use it to try and recover a crashing/problematic Window installation if , e.g Windows is crashing or broken. Is why one should be doing their own backups)

XP Home, Version 2002. It's a Dell.

I don't see a Recovery Manager anywhere.

Do you have a link to a back-up walkthrough of some sort? I sort of suck at technology. :)

So far, things have been running fine; hopefully they'll continue to do so. Fingers are crossed!

What model Dell? (there should be a Dell tag on your computer with your model info if you don't know). You might also call Dell to inquire about XP Home install CDs for your Dell (usually pretty cheap. i think HP used to charge under $19 USD)

i can post more tomorrow when i have the chance, but for now
> Do you have an external disk for backups? (always backup to a physically different disk). Personally, i recommend using an external disk with its own AC adapter vs. the small portable type that rely on USB ports for power)

C:\Documents and Settings\yourUserID\Desktop

What model Dell? (there should be a Dell tag on your computer with your model info if you don't know).

I'm not seeing one, but I don't have the original casing. I had to get a new motherboard a few years ago because my caps (?) were busted, and the new one wouldn't fit in the dell case.

Unless I'm missing it somewhere?

I shall look into this!

Just a flash drive, which probably isn't anywhere near big enough for all that.
