Computer hangs when accessing windows recovery console

I am using windows xp SP3 home edition.
As my computer is unable to boot up (including safe mode), I had to access the windows recovery console from my windows xp installation cd. However, the system hangs when I reach the which windows installation would you like to logon to? After I select 1, it just hangs. Also if I try to reinstall windows, the computer also hangs at searching for previously installed versions of windows... As I do not have a spare hard drive, I would like to seek advice on what I can do.

Oh I have tried its not about the ram nor graphic card. Think its some hard disk data error but I could not run the chkdsk utility.
