Computer turns itself on - multiple fixes unsuccessful - any advice appreciated

I saw this happen once when it was caused by an incompatibility in the software I was using for my CDRW. I think it was something "Easy CD". It was just a version that was incompatible with XP. It was a pain to uninstall because you had to change values in the INI file to make it quit. After I installed Nero it worked fine. Driver conflicts can cause hardware problems like this. In my case it was just a software incompatibility. If you use WinXP SP2 there may be a list of software that is just incompatible as well.

Worked for me too (well, for my client, allright)...It was AOpen motherboard, brand new system, but it was Yukon Gigabit ethernet card....

Thanks ForbiddenPlaneT for demystifying this interesting behaviour.

This is making sense, i have allmost same setup as xeno and having the same problem. Everytime i turn off my pc, i flip the switch on the back of my psu, so it dosnt start up by itself. I was sure it was a motherboard issue, somehow it seem obvious.

What is more annoying is, i changed to this mobo (p5ad2 premium) from an intel board that was having random reboot issues, just to end up with this problem. And i am quite sure that i am far from the only one, having issues with asus support. Their website is the slowest on the planet, and they seem to only release updates for 64bit stuff, instead of fixing other issues like this first.

But when i get home from work today, i will try and locate the extra setting for WOL, i really hope that solves it. If it does not, i will rma this mobo for sure!

Ok, all i can say is triton was right on the nail... i went to manage computer>advanced properties of the yukon adapter (both of them) and disabled magic packet.. and viola.. awsome!!!!

Thanks for the help.

A few more sugestions

I had this problem with my system for a long time. Mine is a Microstar board and Athlon 64 processor with Cooler Master water cooling. THe strange thing with mine is that if I put it in hibernation it would stay off. It only self started if it was actually powered off, but not from hibernation. Usually I just flipped the power switch on the back to make sure it would stay off. Simple and effective. I just considered it a fluke nusance. Then just lately I installed a PCI card for extra USB and firewire and behold it stays off when powered down. THis lead me to suspect that its a USB problem. Remember USB is powered even when the system is off. You can tell this by the fact that some LEDS on USB devices stay lite even after the system is powered off. I suspect that this is what is causing these machines to turn back on. Something plugged into the USB triggers the power supply to turn on just like the mother board switch does. It might be a power drain or surge from a printer or something similar. To find out for sure if this is the problem turn off all the USB in the BIOS and see if it turns on still. Or just ignore the problem and flip the power switch.
