Crashing while on line

At the risk of sounding really dumb, I don't understand what you just said. Please walk me through this very slowly. Where am I supposed to copy and paste to? How do I get to an open command prompt?

Copy all inside the box.

then Start-Run
type
cmd
click OK

Black screen of command prompt opens.

Rt click and paste to the black screen.

I would never tell a user to handle Services based on RAM use! Services are based on need, not RAM. Some NEED to be set to Automatic to start on boot. Two of these are:

1. IPSEC: And they 'depend' on the following Services running:
IPSEC driver
RPC
TCP/IP Protocol driver

2. DNS: and this depends on the following Service running:
TCP/IP Protocol

Using a good reference for handling Services will be of help to the novice. In my opinion, the best is the Black Viper site: http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

Something for you particularly to consider is the fact that you are using IE8. This is a very bloated browser, using a great deal of RAM. You would do better going back to IE7. Please read the following:

IE8- What Are They Thinking?!
https://www.techspot.com/vb/topic124001.html

Use the information I gave you in the previous post for stopping the unnecessary startups. That's your first step. Changing the Service Statup type should be the last!

Well you don't have to tell them that!

But I will tell them what I need to tell them based on my knowledge and experience.

IPSEC who uses it?

Bobbye this is not DNS Services but DNS Client!

And not mentioned by you here Remote Registry is a security threat.

Hailey will never miss these and if so will be prompted in most cases!

Mike

Mike, it was not my intention to go through all the Services. But rather to stress the need for the DNS and IPSEC Services, remind to check Dependencies and give a reference to follow.

But I will tell them what I need to tell them based on my knowledge and experience.

So will I.

Geeze Bobbye

Again! This is not DNS Services it is DNS Client!.

I repeat not DNS Services it is DNS Client!

Also you keep talking about dependencies! If they are not running they don't need these Services they depend on. And no other Services depends on them!

But before you mention it, if they depend on each other and they are both disabled then they cancel each other out!

Hardly any private individual needs and few Corporate entities really need or use IPSEC. Its kind of like IP6, it is catching on slowly! Best handled by HW via advanced Router/Firewall anyway. Which is why the people that would use IPSEC use the HW route!

Since it is primarily meant to be used with/between a File Server and LAN workstations, without a File server it is useless anyway!

Now unless Haily may have a File Server hmmmmm.

I hope you are learning something. But I hope Haily will not rush out and buy a File Sever so she can use IPSEC!

Well class is over and I will make no more responses in Haily's thread!

Mike

EDIT: Except to Haily or someone else!

Mike, I can't pm because I don't have enough posts right now. I am at work right now and will be continuing with your previous instructions when I return home. Hope you will be available tonight. You haven't let me down thus far and I am confident that you will continue to help me get my computer up to speed. Once I copy and paste at the command prompt what do I do next and in what order? By the way, I don't have a file server. Thanks, Hailey

Lol!

And don't run out and buy one! :haha:

After copy/paste you do nothing but ignore the not found etc as these are normal this was designed to run on different configurations.

As you work your way down the list after the above just ask if you need help!

Mike

Mike, did the copy and paste. I am now in internet explorer but cannot find folder options under tools or view.

Not in Internet Explorer!

In Windows Explorer. (My Computer).

I will be leaving for dinner at 6:15 Eastern time for a couple hours.

Mike

Oops! Where do you go in my computer? I'm sorry but I really am a novice. I'm learning alot but you are so out of my league! LOL

I am so proud I found it and completed the task. I am getting ready for AutoRun. Have a wonderful dinner.

Everything is running fine. I can't get to myspace.com though. It says that Internet Explorer cannot display the web page. I tried diagnose the problem, but it says there isn't one. Then I went into more information and got this:

This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:

•Internet connectivity has been lost.
•The website is temporarily unavailable.
•The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable.
•The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain.
•There might be a typing error in the address.
•If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click Tools, click Internet Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section.

I don't think the website is down because I get this same thing when I'm at other web pages. Some of the content on the page has this same box on it.

I went into services and did what you suggested, closed my browser and then reopened but i still can't get to myspace. i don't have vista I have xp so I was unsure about what you were speaking of prior to the services suggestion.

I'm not sure on Hostsman. Wasn't it updated nearly a year ago?

Try this: Updated March-15-2009

You may want to update to a more secure Hosts file
There's lots of important info on that here: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
As it's difficult to see the actual download, here it is: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.zip
Important! Windows Vista requires special instructions: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hostsvista.htm

Simply download the hosts.zip file, extract, then run mvps.bat, then restart

[Important Notice - 2K/XP/Vista Users]
In most cases a large HOSTS file (over 135 kb) tends to slow down the machine. This only occurs
in W2000 and XP. Windows 98 and Windows ME are not affected.

To resolve this issue (manually) open the "Services Editor"

Start | Run (type) "services.msc" (no quotes)
Scroll down to "DNS Client", Right-click and select: Properties
Click the drop-down arrow for "Startup type"
Select: Manual, click Apply/Ok and restart.

Then restart, and test browsing the Internet again :)

Good morning Haily

OK good. HostMan doing it job.

This is HostMan blocking My Space as it is a point of possible infection lately.

To fix it open Hostman by dblclicking its green Icon in the System Tray (bottom Rt with Time and Volume control).

This will pop up Hostman. Click Tools then Hostman editor. Then click Edit at top and click Find, along the bottom of the window will be a block to type the search word! Type myspace!

Here you can just check the box to keep it, but disabled, or you can Rt Click the line and delete it. Once deleted click next and do the same. There may be 10-20 or more of these.

When finished click the X to exit and yes to save.

While here in the Host file you may want to scroll from top to bottom and see how big this list is. These are all blocked incoming and outgoing. These are known verified trouble spots that are blocked from access.

When finished MySpace will be available.

EDIT: No do not do the MVP etc as HostMan already has them. Also leave DNS Client off!

Kim FYI HostMan itself is not a HOST file it downloads other hosts files and installs them 1. MVP host, 2. HpHosts, 3. Mike's Adblock list (now defunct) and 4 Peter Lowes AdServers list. HostMan downloads and verifies, sorts and removes dups.

Mike

mflynn just to cut in
Which is better "Hostsman" updated June (or something) 2008
Or "Hosts" by mvps.org Updated March-15-2009

I really don't know

Kim

HostMan is the program not the HOSTS file!

HostMan downloaded the latest MVP Host file plus 3 others!

Mike

Good morning Mike, I went back in and turned DNS off. Did exactly what you said for hostsman and myspace comes up. You are truly a wealth of knowledge! I cannot tell you how much I have learned in the last week.

I did the hosts.zip and mvp thing that kim suggested is that a problem? I deleted the zip file it created. I have the original that you had me download. Am I okay?

Well! It created duplicates!

I think you should click up Hostman and and click the Hosts at top as before. Then click Exclusion list and type in *myspace*.* and click OK, this will keep myspace from being blocked again when you update.

Then click the same Host Tab on top and click Update then the update at the bottom.

Then click Hosts again and Find duplicates this should bring it back in to a clean condition.

Mike

Good morning Mike. I went in and did what you said. Myspace comes up. You are truly a wealth of knowledge! I have learned a tremendous amount in this past week. Thank you again.

I have learned one very important thing today, nothing personal to anyone, I definetly need to stick with one tech and that would be you Mike. Hope that is okay with you.

Maybe read the thread again, you may have missed Bobbye's and my earlier posts :D
Anyway, if you like mflynn that's ok :)
But stop replying to yourself whilst you're at it, I've merged more posts than anyone else ever, in this thread, just by you. (including your last one)

I am truly sorry for that. As I have said before I am very new to this and am still trying to learn my way. Maybe I should have gone into better detail with my last post. If I have too many things going on at once I get confused. Sometimes it is better for me to stick with one set of instructions. It was nothing to do with you or Bobbye more my own short comings. I will definetly try and do better when posting.

Ah your doing great with the descriptions. Just try to remember if your post is the last post edit it in instead of a new post.

Now you should be in good shape. So what next?

Mike

The bar at the bottom of my browser states this Done, but with errors on page. It does this on all pages. What have I done? I also wanted to get your view on Windows 7. I have xp at home and love it but I have vista on my computer that I use at the church and I HATE it.
