Crimson Desert won't work on Intel Arc GPUs, developer suggests users ask for refunds

WTF?! Crimson Desert, the new action RPG that promised players a game like no other, has failed to meet its pre-release hype. It's going to be an especially disappointing experience for anyone using an Intel Arc GPU, as developer Pearl Abyss has revealed that the game will not run on those cards at all. Its solution? Ask the platform they bought it from for a refund.

Following a slew of mostly average to quite good pre-launch reviews for Crimson Desert, Pearl Abyss' stock price fell almost 30%. It seems many had expected the game to receive Baldur's Gate 3-level praise.

Critics' opinions don't always match gamers' views, of course. But less than 24 hours after launch, Crimson Desert has a Mixed rating on Steam. This is a game that boasts over 100 hours of gameplay, but these early impressions aren't promising.

One of the 6,650 negative comments comes from a user with an Intel B580 card in their PC. Their complaint is certainly justifiable: Crimson Desert doesn't work on Intel GPUs. Any system packing one of Intel's cards that tries to play the game will see an error message that reads: "Graphics device is currently not supported"

What's especially annoying for Arc owners is that there was no confirmation from Pearl Abyss that these GPUs were unsupported. While they were lacking from the game's system requirements, that's not something unusual given the small percentage of Arc users compared to Nvidia/AMD GPU owners.

The Crimson Desert frequently asked questions page confirms that the game does not currently support Intel Arc graphics cards. The FAQ advises asking the platform where it was purchased for a refund.

This disclaimer was not on the page prior to Crimson Desert's launch. Pearl Abyss apologizes for any inconvenience caused, which isn't likely to placate Arc owners.

One popular post on the Steam reviews section reads, "might be the first time I've seen a dev deliberately block a GPU brand."

The use of the term "currently" would usually suggest Arc support will arrive at a later date, but the fact Pearl Abyss is advising people to seek refunds sounds like the company isn't going to bother.

Will Crimson Desert do a No Man's Sky or Cyberpunk 2077 and eventually be patched into the game we expected from the trailers (and add Arc support)? We'll have to wait and see. In the meantime, check out our GPU performance benchmarks for the game, where we noted the lack of Intel Arc support.

Sounds like their engine doesn't support it, and it's not a quick patch to do so.
I would expect them to add it in eventually, but they don't want to give a timeline.

A "small" oversight to not test a somewhat popular card before launch. Or maybe they knew but just forgot to update the page...

..... soooo they do not support fully DX12 ultimate in the engine .... huh .... well that's a choice.. Any engine fully supporting dx12u correctly should at least be able to launch the game. Direct-x is literally a rendering layer for the engine > dx12u hardware .. to not run means the graphics pipeline is not dx12u compliant.

let me guess, some vibe-coding ***-jack did this ...

Or, more likely, its because this engine was originally built around DX9, then 11. So it may not be fully DX12u compliant. IF any part of it is still reliant on DX11, that would cause issues with Intel GPUs that dont natively support anything but 12, and the studio figured these cards with a precisely 0.1% marketshare are not worth the resources to support.

Exactly this. Although you are being too generous with 0.1% market share.

Pearls failure:
Not communicating Intel Arc GPU incompatibility

Consumer failure:
Using Intel Arc GPU to begin with

Broken api, broken standards, broken gpu markets, broken hw markets, broken game developement... I'm just done with pc gaming...

I was wondering how a game would not work with a card if the API's were standardized. This answers my question.

Kinda reminds me of back in the day when games would either run or not depending on what GPU you had ATI/nVidia/S3 and that sort of thing happening today is just poor development all round

The publisher didn't think it was worth it for Arc cards, but they implemented a block, it makes no sense. No matter the market share, we should be opposing blocks on what GPU's work for a game.

Block? I highly doubt that was the case… they just didn’t spend extra resources to support ARC… they didn’t purposely block people using them…

No they really did block it. Intel tried to talk to them and help them add support but they actively ignored them and made the game refuse to even start if an Intel GPU was detected. Really sh1tty behaviour from a really slapshod dev team.

South Korea has made some incredible video games in the past, but this is not that.
This is a pile of hot garbage made from generative assets and toxic business practices.

You got a source for that?

Apparently the developer blocked Intel Arc cards from working, Intel tried to work with the developer Pearl Abyss for several years, but were ignored. For some reason instead of patching Crimson Desert to work, Pearl Abyss recommends getting a refund for Arc owners.

We need to be angry about this even if we don't own the card. If game devs don't support other players like Intel then there will be no chance of breaking what has become a very comfy duopoly for NVidia and AMD.
Or even a monopoly for Nvidia, Deep Learning Super Slop 5 sets a bad precedent for games to only run on Nvidia cards with proprietary AI filters.

Yes.. but that's not the same as intentionally blocking ARC cards.

Again - not being compatible is not the same as actively blocking…

Hey, don’t get upset that you failed reading comprehension
What a waste of my time! The game puts a dialog up on screen when any Intel card is plugged in. No dialog comes up for any AMD or Nvidia cards. It's clearly blocking Intel cards and only a desperate inability to go 'oh yeah, you were right' is keeping you battling on with these pedantic responses. I'm done wasting my time on your pointless arguing.
