On Inspiron 1150 I found the (Microchip) 24LC16B on the underside of the mobo, between the daughter card and DIMM B.
I could have just shorted out the pins, but wanted to read the chip, since the hard drive password might be the same as the master/admin. I knew it was locked because I tried the drive in other pc's.
Followed directions from dp.allhyper.com
The circuit is very, very easy to build and the software is free. About $2 for the 2 diodes and resistors from radioshack.
I got the admin/master password and it ended being the same password for hard drive.
and thanks Paragon33 for help
Update!
After reading the chip you can decrypt it yourself with a freeware prog called CmosPwd.

Ididmyc600 said:Wow what a site, if you just want to recover the password without shorting it then this site is fantastic,
I'm going to build the device and test it and then put a link on the site for it.

I sucessfully "paperclipped" my Dell Precision M70 workstation laptop and now the password is gone, the chip is right under the Quadro videocard.
I did use the paperclip method because I don't have any short wiring tools, when I short it, I did not plug in the graphics adapter, I just knew that it is shorted by seeing the fan came on, and after shorting 3-6 pin on the chip for like twice, the computer now is in manufacture mode. a $2000 laptop now comes to life.
thanks all. if you need pictures of it, let me know.
This is one (out of a few) method of clearing the password. Don't know if it will work on your particular model. One advantage to this method is, you recover the password and if lucky that same password could work for the hard drive if it's locked. Follow instructions from dp.allhyper.com. If your not comfortable opening your laptop and soldering small wires, I suggest you try one of the other methods mentioned in this thread, or find someone to do it for you.Essexman said:Hi all, I to am new to this forum and like most here need some help/advice.
Please bear with me in my lack of knowledge on computers.
Ok, here goes.
My father-in-law has recently purchased (from a dubious source methinks) a Dell Inspiron 8500. Like many on here, he can not get past the pre-start up screen. It asks him for the Administartor password, which alas he hasn't got.
I have looked through most of this forum, but now my head aches and my eyes are throbbing. If anyone could give some help or know of any way that this 'Admin password' can be over ridden, i would be very grateful.
the system comes up with the following code #djjfw0j-595b
